荔枝對保鮮度要求特別高，古時別稱「離枝」，意思為「離枝即食」。7月，紅彤彤的荔枝結實纍纍，糯米糍、妃子笑、桂味等琳瑯滿目的品種，依著成熟期接力登場。荔枝性質溫熱，果糖含量高達20%，豐富維生素 C ，滋補卻容易上火，偏偏荔枝果肉香甜多汁，誘人口慾。
牛奶和鮮奶油的香氣與荔枝出奇的對味。只在食材和製作上稍加調整，即使沒有雞蛋、乳脂含量低，都可以做出細緻綿密的意式冰淇淋 Gelato。
