Fiddler on the Roof《
Tradition《
Sabbath Prayer《

Anatevka《
Fiddler on the Roof《
Sheldon Harnick
Tradition《
A fiddler on the roof.
Sounds crazy, no?
But here, in our little village of Anatevka,
You might say every one of us 或許可以說:
Is a fiddler on the roof,
Trying to scratch out a pleasant, simple tune
Without breaking his neck.
It isn't easy.
You may ask,
"Why do we stay up there if it's so dangerous?"
Well, we stay because Anatevka is our home.
And how do we keep our balance?
That I can tell you in one word:
TRADITION!!
Tradition!
Because of our traditions,
We've kept our balance for many, many years.
Here in Anatevka,
we have tradition for everything:
How to eat, how to sleep, how to work, 吃飯、睡覺、工作,
How to wear clothes.
For instance,
we always keep our heads covered
And always wear a little prayer shawl.
This shows our constant devotion to God.
You may ask,
"How did the tradition get started?" 「
I'll tell you.
I don't know.
But it's a tradition.
And because of our traditions,
Every one of us knows who he is 每個人都明瞭自己是誰,
And what God expects him to do.
Who, day and night must scramble of a living,
Feed a wife and children,
Say his daily prayers?
And who has the right as master of a house,
To have the final word at home?
The papa, tradition!
Who must know the way to make 誰須知曉如何維持一個
A proper home, a quiet home, a kosher home?
Who must raise a family
And run the home,
So papa's free to read the holy book?
The mama, tradition!
At three I started Hebrew school,
At ten I learned a trade.
I hear they picked a bride for me, 聽說他們為我已將新娘找,
I hope she's pretty.
The sons, tradition!
And who does mama teach
To mend and tend and fix,
Preparing me to marry
Whoever papa picks?
The daughters, tradition!
Tradition, tradition…
without our traditions, 要是沒了這些個傳統,
Our lives would be as shaky as… as…
As a fiddler on the roof.
Sabbath Prayer《
May the Lord protect and defend you.
May He always shield you from shame.
May you come to be in Paradise a shining name.
May you be like Ruth and Esther.
May you be deserving of praise.
Strengthen them, oh lord,
And keep them from the strangers way.
May God bless you and grant you long lives.
May the Lord fulfill our Sabbath prayer for you.
May He make you good mothers and wives.
May He send husbands who will care for you.
May the Lord protect and defend you.
May the Lord preserve you from pain.
Favor them, oh lord,
with happiness and peace.
Oh, hear our Sabbath prayers.
Amen.
Matchmaker《
According to our tradition,
The girls of Anatevka depend on the matchmaker
To find them good husbands.
Matchmaker, matchmaker,
Make me a match,
Find me a find,
Catch me a catch; 牽我紅線;
Matchmaker, matchmaker,
Look through your book
And make me a perfect match.
Matchmaker, matchmaker,
I'll bring the veil,
You bring the groom,
Slender and pale;
Bring me a ring, for I'm longing to be 帶來婚戒一只,因我渴望
The envy of all I see.
For papa, make him a scholar,
For mama, make him rich as a king,
For me, well, I wouldn't holler
If he were as handsome as anything.
Match maker, match maker,
Make me a match,
Find me a find,
Catch me a catch.
Night after night I'm alone in the dark,
So strike me a match of my own.
If I Were A Rich Man《假使我是有錢人》
Oh, Lord! You made many, many poor people.
I realize, of course, it's no shame to be poor,
But it's not great honor either.
So what would have been so terrible
If I had a small fortune?
If I were a rich man, 若我是個有錢人,
Daidle, deedle, daidle, digguh,
digguh, deedle daidle dum.
All day long I'd biddy, biddy bum,
If I were a wealthy man.
Wouldn't have to work hard,
Daidle, deedle, daidle, digguh,
digguh, deedle, daidle dum.
If I were a biddy, biddy, rich,
deedle, deedle, deedle daidle, man.
I'd build a big tall house with rooms
by the dozen,
Right in the middle of the town.
A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below.
There would be one long staircase just going up,架一道長長的階梯往上,
and one even longer coming down.
And one more leading nowhere, just for show.
I'd fill my yard with chicks and turkeys
and geese and ducks,
For the town to see and hear; 讓全鎮都看見、聽到;
Squawking just as noisily as they can.
And each loud quack and cluck and gobble
and honk will land like a trumpet on the ear.
As if to say: here lives a wealthy man.
I see my wife, my Golde,
Looking like a rich man's wife with 模樣就像個闊太太,
a proper double chin; 有個相稱的雙下巴;
Supervising meals to her heart's delight.
I see her putting on airs
And strutting like a peacock.
Oi! what a happy mood she's in, 喔!
Screaming at the servants day and night.
The most important men in town
Will come to fawn on me.
They will ask me to advise them, 求我為他們提出建言,
Like a Solomon, the wise.
"If you please, Reb Tevye, 「求求你,泰維,
Pardon me, Reb Tevye" 不好意思,泰維」
Posing problems that would cross a Rabbi's eyes.
And it won't make one bit of difference
If I answer right or wrong.
When you're rich they think you really know.
If I were rich I'd have the time that I lack
To sit in the synagogue and pray.
And maybe have a seat by the eastern wall.
And I'd discuss the holly books
With the learned men Seven hours ev'ry day.
That would be the sweetest thing of all.
Lord, who made the lion and the lamb,
You decreed I should be what I am.
Would it spoil some vast, eternal plan
If I were a wealthy man?
Sunrise, Sunset《
Sunrise Sunset
In Anatevka, as everywhere,
A wedding is a joyous traditional event-
But for Papa and Mama,
There are some tears along with the laughter.
Now is the little boy a bridegroom,
Now is the little girl a bride.
Under the canopy I see them, 我見他們在蓬蓋下,
Side by side.
When did she get to be a beauty?
When did he grow to be so tall?
Wasn't it yesterday when they were small?
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the days; 光陰似流水;
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers,
Blossoming even as we gaze.
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years; 期年似箭已難追;
One season following another, 季復一季,
Laden with happiness and tears.
What words of wisdom can I give them?
How can I help to ease their way?
Now they must learn from one another
Day by day.
To Life《敬生命》
Life is hard in Anatevka
But we have learned to take what comes
And hope for better days.
To life! L'chaiim!
Life has a way of confusing us, 生命總有它令人迷惑之處,
Blessing and bruising us.
Drink! L'chaiim! To life!
One day is honey and raisin cake,
Next day a stomach ache.
Drink! L'chaiim! To life!
Our great men have written words of wisdom
To be used when hardship must be faced.
Life obliges us with hardship
So the words of wisdom shouldn't go to waste.
To us and our good fortune!
Be happy, be healthy, long life!
And if our good fortune never comes,
Here's to whatever comes!
Drink! L'chaiim! To Life!
Anatevka《
Now the Tzar has decreed that 如今沙皇下令
We must leave our homes.
But our little village will always be 但,無論我們去到哪裡,
In our hearts wherever we go.
Anatevka, Anatevka,
Underfed, overworked Anatevka.
Where else could Sabbath be so sweet?
Anatevka, Anatevka,
Intimate, obstinate, Anatevka.
Where I know ev'ryone I meet.
Soon I'll be a stranger in a strange new place,
Searching for an old familiar face from Anatevka.
I belong in Anatevka,
Tumble down, work a day Anatevka.
Dear little village, little town of mine.
