An open letter from one of my fans. Thank u very much for your write up.
While every Malaysian turn their attention to our three time Silver Medalist hero LCW on his defeat, let's remembered what Azizulhasni Awang had achieved for us in men's Keirin Track Cycling race.
Keirin's cycling is a event dominated by European/Western countries, this is not at all considered as traditional sports for Malaysia. Only 5 Asian qualify for Olmypic this time, two each from Japan and Korea with our very own Pocket Rocket.
Azizul was called Pocket Rocket due to his small stature, he's only 1.68 meter.
He managed to went into semi final at Beijing and final at London, ended up with no medal.
He turn up to Rio again and ended up as the ONLY Asian semi-finalist. He went all the way to final and bronze medal was his reward after a tough race behind the great Jason Kenny and Buchli. Interestingly, three of them race in the same heat at the semi final and the result was the same as final.
The Bronze Medal at Keirin was a historical milestone not only for Terrenganu & Malaysia, it's also a great achievement for Asia at this very event. It prove that Malaysian are able to compete with the world with proper training and support.
I had watched Keirin since 2004 Athens Olmypics due to the nature that this is a very high exciting game with our very own national cyclist such as Josiah Ng and Azizul flying on our national flag. I ended up with disappointment but with hope at every Olympics. Azizul had done it this time and he deserved every single applause from the whole nation. Furthermore, he was one of the few sportsman/woman who had fought so hard for our national pride and was able to maintain at the highest level most of the time, just like LCW.
Maybe cycling achievement was not as shinning as Badminton but he deserved every respect from us as a Malaysian, just like how we had cheer for our badminton team.
Great job Team Malaysia!
