A Brief History of E-sports: from games to sports
Author: Dai Yanmiao
“In Korea, e-sports has become a sport like international chess.”
Summer has come, and so has the Hong Kong E-sports and Music Festival. It is obvious that e-sports is gradually growing in popularity.
E-sports was officially recognized as a sports category by the International Olympic Committee last year. It then became a demonstration sport at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games. Once regarded as just a plaything, gaming now gets a position in sports. Nevertheless, many still refuse to recognize e-sports as 'sports'. How can you call it a sport if you don’t sweat while playing it, they ask.
With the rise of Tencent, gaming has become a profitable industry. Even those who dislike gaming have to recognize this.
After 20 years of development, e-sports is currently in an awkward position, somewhere between serious sport and leisure activity. Presently, besides magazines, there are only few books about the industry, with stories of successful players or analysing industry trends. Publications that provide a systematic overview of the history of e-sports are minimal. Therefore, the book titled A Brief History of E-sports by Chinese communications scholar Dai Yanmiao helps fill this gap.
A Brief History of E-sports comprises four parts. It tells from far to near how e-sports was gradually transformed from simple gaming into a billion US dollar global industry in the past two decades.
As the author is a scholar, the book has an academic tone. This can be an advantage, as it provides people with little or no knowledge of e-sports with a clear and brief understanding of the industry. I like the last part of the book the most because the author analyses the current issues in the e-sports field and prospects for its future, which is inspiring for the general public.
Today, soccer has become a part of our life, which was not the case in the past. At the beginning of the book, the author recalls that in the late 19th century, German people strongly opposed English football from across the ocean and articles were published criticizing it. Will the controversy on e-sports today become the same scenario and development as that on football in the past?

I was a Hong Kong National Rowing Team. However, I didn’t go to the Olympic Games. I didn’t go to the Asian Games. Because I was not qualified. I was too weak even I thought I was the hardest worker at the gym. The dream sometimes never happens in your life.
But so what? I won the INBF Bodybuilding Overall Championships and Olympiclifting Masters 85kg class Champion in 2018, and represented Canada to participate in Pan American & Canadian Masters Champions in 2018.
Obviously, I didn’t make any $$ and reputation like the rock, but I earned respect from my trainees.

Thank you universe for this perspective and reminder 💫
Not an easy concept to process, but the idea that sometimes our biggest and most important dreams that DON’T COME TRUE are often times the BEST THING that never happened.
I’m shooting JUNGLE CRUISE now and right before I get called to set, I look up and see a CFL (Canadian Football League) game on my TV.
I do a double take and realize that’s the same field I played on when I played in the CFL. I do a triple take and see the very man who coached and mentored me and ultimately had to cut me from the team, Wally Buono who is now head coach and GM of the BC LIONS in Vancouver.
For years of playing ball, I was always the “hardest worker in the room” and did everything I could to make the CFL and then hopefully, make it to the NFL where I dreamed of having an All Pro Football career.
Instead, I was cut from the team, told I wasn’t good enough - and sent home with $7 bucks to my name.
After years of blood, sweat, guts and tears, my dream was over.
Fell into depression, didn’t know what to do or where to turn. Eventually, I picked myself back up again, said fuck this and refocused and committed to another long journey.
The rest is history.
I’ve been there, so I encourage you to keep working hard and remember that sometimes our dreams that don’t come true, can ultimately become the best thing that never happened.
