They are creepy. They are kooky. They are mysterious. They are The Addams Family.
At first, I was wondering if the kids would wanna catch the movie because it is not quite the kind of typical animated film we usually watch. Do they even know about this first Halloween family and will they be okay seeing how quirky and eccentric the members are? The big girl then quipped "Mummy, I already know who is The Addams Family but I want to know them better." Well, guess we were all set for the movie date then.
She reminded me that sometimes, you just have to get to know someone better in order to accept and understand him/her. The 87-minute movie comes with some humourous references and subtle messages that perhaps only adults and bigger kids might understand. However, the plot is kept simple and kid-friendly, with the antagonist being a reality TV host who is determined to get rid of The Addams Family because they don't fit in. The kids were laughing all the way through and it is definitely a Halloween animated comedy fit for little ones to watch. Their favourite character is undoubtedly the cool, witty and peculiar Wednesday (voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz) because she really stood out from the rest.
The underlying message of the show is to embrace being who you are, that it is okay to be different and that you don't have to change yourself in order to please anyone else. That is something important to learn and I hope the kids will not only learn to accept all of their friends and also be proud of who they themselves are deep down too.
The Addams Family opens in cinemas on 31 October, go watch it with the little ones. They won't be spooked and might love Halloween a little more. Thanks to @uipsingapore for having us at the preview!
