Clear toxins during pregnancy to prevent eczema?
“I’m 32 weeks pregnant now, and my friends advised me to clear toxins by eating watermelon and drinking sweet soup made from lotus’ stamen. This is to prevent the baby from getting eczema.”
CheckCheckCin: Many pregnant women think the heat in their bodies is due to ‘toxins in the fetus’. Since fetuses are ‘body of the primordial yang, it is common for pregnant mothers to have excessive heat.
If you are over-nourished during the pregnancy, always consuming hot, spicy, and deep-fried foods excessively, and staying up late, and if you develop symptoms such as dry throat, persistent thirst, canker sore, bad breath, acne, yellow urine, and bad temper, then you probably have excessive heat. Hence, you should clear the heat and fetal toxins accordingly. Please note that it is important to consume the right medicine that the doctor prescribed because every pregnant woman has different body constitutions.
Rumors have it that Nelumbinis stamen, or the stamen of the lotus, is good for the heart and kidneys and can strengthen the essence of the body, and it is often used to treat nocturnal emission, hematemesis and metrorrhagia, and diarrhea. Nevertheless, pregnant women should seek professional medical advice before consuming it. If an individual’s body is cold and weak, the act of ‘clearing the fetal toxins’ would only cause more harm than good to both the mother and the fetus.
Eczema is a common skin problem. If both parents have this problem, their children would have 70% chance of getting it too. Moreover, the environment around us, the air we breathe, dust mites, and food allergies are also among the non-hereditary causes. Instead of focusing on ‘clearing the fetal toxins’, we should adjust our lifestyle and dietary habits, avoid over-nourishing our body, and cut down on hot, spicy, and heavily flavored foods.

Daily advice for HK immigrants to the West:
Regarding parenting, you need to help your children become financially responsible. This may mean that they’ll have to start working as soon as they’re working age to get perspective of the value of a dollar. In the US, working age is 16. During my summer, I worked in a grocery store. My wife also worked in various jobs when she was a teen. Both my boys worked during their university years, sometimes full-time. Your children need to learn to take pride in earning from the bottom rung of society to appreciate what it means to budget their spending. Some parents start requiring their kids to start buying their own clothes, all the way from shoes, underwear to their coolest school outfit. That’s the policy in my house, not because I don't have any money to buy them any of those things. It’s about learning to budget and save early on. The sooner they learn financial sense, the better. There’s only so much business school can teach your kids.

Daily advice for HK immigrants to the West:
Regarding parenting, you need to do more than making money to provide for your family. Your kids need your emotional support. You need to be involved in your kid’s lives. Many parents are so busy making money that they simply have no time to go to their children’s events. Some will force the kids to play piano while they aren’t even musical. That’s not going to work. You need to be attending your kids’ sports events or debates or other after school activities. In fact, it’s even better to be involved with their learning process. I had trained martial arts and lifted weights with both my kids as they’re growing up. Of course, I’m not perfect in being their coach outside of the mat room or the dojo, but I’m involved. It’s unwise to make the youth pastor, the coach or piano teacher your kid’s babysitter. If you can’t commit or don’t have enough leisure time to walk with your kids during this transition and their adolescent years, don't immigrate. Your kids may end up hating you. They may become latch-key kids who have to transition from having maids in HK to not even having parents present to care for them here, while you work your butt off. You’re better off not immigrating to the West.
