The struggle to perfection – the paintings by Lo Chan Peng
Pan An-Yi, Director of Graduate Stdies, The department of the History of Art & Visual Studies, Cornell University
Historic Figures provide concrete clarification to A Brief History of Time and showcase the artist’s perspective and philosophical approaches to the history of humanity. The historical personae he has selected narrate the progress from “godliness” to the “Theory of Evolution” followed by “Anthropocentrism” and “Eurocentrism” before the expansion of Imperialism and Capitalism which then led to Colonialism and eventually the rise of “Socialism”. The “Nazism” of World War II in Europe and “Japanese Imperialism” caused the unprecedented disaster. Skrik from the Portraiture collection shows Lo’s concerns over the working class whom reiterated their mindless tasks in order to survive: “I think I now have a better understanding of this world and have realised how helpless I am in this vast universe.”
Lo tactfully chooses to paint former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American president Abraham Lincoln as a contrast and comparison. Churchill fought against the invasion of Nazism, even though he succeeded with the help of allies, the rise of Neo-Nazism and extreme right-wing supporters in recent years are slowly gaining advocates in Europe. The current president of the United States Donald Trump sees himself as a pioneer like Lincoln, yet his deep-rooted racism has encouraged the believers of extreme right-wing philosophy and white supremacy. Despite his defeat in the recent presidential election, the issues regarding extreme right-wing supporters in Europe and America would remain a challenging one. Both Churchill and Lincoln reflect on the bight and the good of humanity, and they are praised for their reminding us of the dark side of humanity.
Through Portraiture, Lo explores the struggles men encounter on their path to the godliness. The female sitter and plants stand for the friction between temptation and the sacred, which then lead to the nuanced relationship between “consciousness” and “the ability to define good and evil”, meaning the connection between the “mortal” and the “saintly” .

Sikhs & Indian contribution VE (Victory in Europe) Day marks the acceptance of Nazi Germany’s surrender to the Allies during World War II on May 8, 1945. In most of Europe, the US and Canada saw the day with huge celebrations ! Their successes were adding to the growing narrative of the Indian armed forces contribution to Allied victory. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has come a long way from its modest beginning to become one of the finest air forces in the world, renowned for its professionalism and competence. My friend Gary, a Chinese American who was born and grew up in America is in Mainland China, tracing his roots and for the first time is getting to experience Southern China all on his own, completely uncensored and so I had to meet up and ask him what he thinks of the drastic differences between living in China and America from the point of view as an Asian American, does he feel he fits in? Is his Chinese ability good enough? How are people treating him and what does he think about the crowds, noises, food, culture and his experiences so far...
Only since the 1940s when the United States and China became allies during World War II, did the situation for Chinese Americans begin to improve, as restrictions on entry into the country, naturalization and mixed marriage were being lessened. In 1943, Chinese immigration to the United States was once again permitted—by way of the Magnuson Act—thereby repealing 61 years of official racial discrimination against the Chinese. Large-scale Chinese immigration did not occur until 1965 when the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 lifted national origin quotas. After World War II, anti-Asian prejudice began to decrease, and Chinese immigrants, along with other Asians (such as Japanese, Koreans, Indians and Vietnamese), have adapted and advanced. Currently, the Chinese constitute the largest ethnic group of Asian Americans (about 22%), and have confounded earlier expectations that they would form an indigestible mass in American society. For example, many Chinese Americans of American birth may know little or nothing about traditional Chinese culture, just as European Americans and African Americans may know little or nothing about the original cultures of their ancestors.
As of the 2010 United States Census, there are more than 3.3 million Chinese in the United States, about 1% of the total population. The influx continues, where each year ethnic Chinese people from the People's Republic of China, Taiwan and to a lesser extent Southeast Asia move to the United States, surpassing Hispanic and Latino immigration by 2012.

致辭全文:
Ladies and gentlemen, good evening, I am honored to have the opportunity to share some thoughts with all of you here. My name is Freddy Lim, a parliamentarian from Taiwan, and am affiliated with the New Power Party, which is only one year old. The NPP received a lot of support from young people in Taiwan, which made us the third largest party in the Taiwanese parliament, and a new force in Taiwanese politics. I would like to express our voices to strengthen our mutual friendship, with the hope that you may continue to be Taiwan’s strong partners, offer us your support for our participation in international organizations to make our own contribution to the world.
Despite being a country that still has a hard time joining the UN,Taiwan is, in fact, a sovereign state with territories, people, elected government, and president. Last Friday, we had our third rotation of power, showing that Taiwan’s democracy is both stable and reliable.
Taiwan has a mature public health and national health insurance system, an outstanding biotech industry, as well as rich experiences in researching and developing medicines and vaccines. We believe that, through multilateral medical cooperation, participating in the global epidemic control and becoming an official member of the WHO, we will absolutely contribute in the global fight against diseases.
The complicated history of Taiwan surfaced with the rare mention of UN Resolution 2758 in the WHA invitation to Taiwan. After World War II, the Chiang Kai-shek regime who had nowhere to go after losing the Chinese Civil War was sent to Taiwan by the Allies, where it started a prolonged authoritarian rule. Along with the regime, the international community also threw the “one China” problem to Taiwan. In 1971, the UN passed resolution 2758 to expel the Chiang Kai-shek regime occupied the seat for China. However, Chiang’s regime was not only unrepresentative of China, it did not represent the people of Taiwan either. After decades of resistance by the people, Taiwan has finally become a young democracy. Now that the Taiwanese people are extending their efforts to contribute to and participate in different aspects in the world, we sincerely hope that Taiwan would engage in more positive and respectable exchanges with the world as a normal country, to fulfill its obligations as a global citizen.
Like all of you, we firmly stands behind the universal values of freedom, democracy, and human rights, and continuously work for these values. I believe that, based on our shared values, Taiwan would absolutely become a reliable and friendly partner with supports from all the nations. I would like to sincerely thank you for being good friends of the Taiwanese people, and sincerely hope that you would continue to support our international participation. Let’s stay closer to work for a better world.
It’s a pleasure to speak to all of you here, thank you for your time, and have a good evening.
