This video was filmed on my very first day in the gym with @tompurvisptrts at the tail end of May. He’d never met me before, and we were on the back of an impromptu 1-hr whiteboard lecture 📝 on what most of the world calls “warming up” and at RTS we generally refer to as “exercise preparation”.
-
A lot of our later conversations were much more technical 🤓 but I thought this was a really accessible way to introduce Tom to many of you who won’t be aware of the man who is behind so much of the accurate information you’ve learnt over the years.
-
Tom’s a big proponent of his own RTS motto of “Think science, speak client” and meeting the person you’re talking to “where they’re at” 🗣 You’ll note how casual his terminology was here because he wasn’t sure yet what I was comfortable with. A month later it would probably sound like French to most of the general population 😂
-
Anyway, here he’s putting in quite simple layman’s terms what is happening during a warm-up set ⚡️ He’s just getting his muscles “used to” contracting, because 5 minutes ago they were doing nothing 😴
-
Think of those sets in terms of their purpose. They’re to prepare your joints for the range they’re going to have to explore, your muscles to contract and the force they and their connective tissue are about to produce and translate respectively, and your neural system to make all of this happen with maximal effort 💯 Yes, the process will encourage increased blood flow so don’t worry about that🫀
-
Lastly, they represent your opportunity to focus on what feels good today and what doesn’t 🤔 and what cues you’re going to focus on delivering in your set this session (based on either an intention bias or something in particular you’re working on or experimenting with) without the distraction of managing and controlling heavy load 🥵
-
If you start thinking about your “non-working” sets in this manner, you might just find you stop wasting too much energy “getting warm” 🤒🤦🏻♂️ and instead spend it improving the readiness of your mind 🧠 muscles 💪🏽 and joints 🦾 to execute the sets ahead of you.
-
Bonne courage, mes amis préparés. Go forth and contract.

CÂU HỎI & BÀI MẪU IELTS SPEAKING - CHỦ ĐỀ SPORTS
Các bạn tham khảo chi tiết ở đây:https://ielts-thanhloan.com/goc-tu-van/speaking-topic-sports.html
1. Do you like sports?
Yes, I’m really keen on sports. I hit the gym club on a daily basis and have my personal trainer help me reach my fitness goal. By taking part in some activities at the gym like running or riding bicycle, I also refresh my mind and recharge my battery.
2. Do you often watch sports on TV?
To be honest, watching sport is not really my cup of tea because I find it rather boring. Moreover, as I’m always busy with my work and study, I spare my leisure time to pursue other interests like listening to American music or going shopping.
3. What is the most popular sport in your country?
In my country, football is the most common sport activity and it acquires its reputation for The King of Sports. Two teams will defend in a football pitch, try to take possession of the ball, pass it to the teammates and aim to score a goal. They also try to avoid injuries and booking. People prefer football than any kinds of sports because of the animating atmosphere it brings back.
4. Do you prefer watching or playing sports?
Absolutely I’d prefer engaging in some sport activities rather than to sit in a dump place to watch others having fun. Firstly, playing sports helps us to keep fit and stay healthy. Secondly, it also enhances people’s competitiveness to win a match. Finally, I believe that sports also teach us about discipline to play fair and how to cooperate with other people to blow a competition away.
5. Are boys and girls interested in the same sports?
Obviously there are outstanding differences in the sports activities that both genders are keen on participating in. For boys, they are into some strenuous sports like volleyball, badminton to build up their strength and muscle. However, girls are big fans of some relaxing activities like yoga or ballet to get into shape and stay healthy.
6. Do you often exercise?
I used to be a couch potato, but then I gain a lot of weight, making me unable to put on any of my favorite clothes. And this had pushed me to hit the gym every day to lose the pounds. I has stuck with it for about few months now and the result is so amazing! I can be confident with my body again now.
7. How do you exercise?
When going to the gym, the very first step that I need to take is to do some warm up by stretching, bending over and doing jumping jack. After this stage, I will work out very intensely with some exercises like deadlift or squat, which can put my muscles in pain for the first few days.
8. Will you exercise in the future?
Yes, definitely. I will take up football, which is the type of sport that I have always wanted to try. I’ll start it by practicing controlling the ball with my legs, and then I will find a friend who plays semi-professionally and ask him to teach me in more details. If I do well with it, maybe I will join in a local football club.

A meal impossible to forget 🍔
-
🤯 On my first trip to OKC, reeling from my maiden few days of getting my mind dismantled in the gym, we finally got to take it down a notch and hang out for dinner at The Cheesecake Factory 🍰 (no cheesecake was actually eaten).
-
At that point it was my “most American” experience so far, topped off by trying my first Impossible Burger 🤩 (Yes, they’re fucking delicious and No, it didn’t turn my arsehole into a broken fire hydrant like a beef burger does)
-
It’s one thing getting to learn from Tom and Mark, the men who pioneered exercise mechanics 🔬 and took it around the world respectively 🌏 but I don’t think I’ll ever forget the first time we properly shot the shit together.
-
I’m back in Oklahoma for my second 2-week stint of intense education, spending 16hrs a day as the dumbest (and weakest) guy in the room by a long way 🥴
-
I’m going to try to get you all a bit more content this time round - I’ve realised I’ve recently acquired a much geekier following 🤓 who love that kinda stuff (which I’m chuffed about 🤩) though it’s a bit tricky with the confidentiality of a lot of the information and equipment I’m being shown.
-
A big part of the @resistancetrainingspecialist ethos is also steering clear of giving people a false impression of understanding by not putting out overly abbreviated sound-bites for others to regurgitate 🗣 it’s why you won’t find reels of superficial educational material on their page... so that’s another obstacle in the production 😕
-
That, and it’s fucking hard to think about making content when you’re focused on learning 🥴 and your brain has constantly been turned into mashed potatoes 🧠🥔
-
So pumped to be back in the trenches though 💪🏽
-
I’m not here to learn this shit... I’m here to live it.
