Celebration of the Father
“Behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia from Jerusalem. They talked with each other about all of these things which had happened. While they talked and questioned together, Jesus himself came near, and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. He said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk, and are sad?” One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things which have happened there in these days?” He said to them, “Foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Didn’t the Christ have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?” Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. They said to one another, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us, while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?” They rose up that very hour, returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them, saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”” (Luke 24:13-18, 25-27, 32-34 WEB)
Did you ever wonder why out of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, only one of them was named while the other remained anonymous?
Therefore, I believe that the name “Cleopas” is crucial to understanding the significance of this passage.
Cleopas is an abbreviated form of the name Cleopatros, made of the two Greek words “kleos” (to celebrate) and pater (father). Cleopas means “celebration of the father”.
Let us see what Jesus did in the passage. He told the two discouraged disciples all about the things concerning Himself in the Old Testament Scriptures, and how He fulfilled them all at the cross.
It was a celebration of the Father, praising Him for His glorious plan of salvation that was once hidden and is now revealed through the prophets, apostles, and the other writers of the Scriptures.
When Jesus celebrated the Father with the two disciples, their hearts “burned”, likely with faith, hope, and love in response to the love and grace of God. They experienced an “Emmaus” (meaning: hot springs) in their hearts, washing away the unbelief and refreshing their spirits.
They were no longer depressed and despondent. Instead, they were filled with hope, and energized in their bodies and souls. Having just walked a long way from Jerusalem to Emmaus, they immediately set off on a journey back to announce the good news they had seen and heard.
This world needs “Cleopas”—a celebration of the Father. They need to hear about a Father God who is gracious and full of love, who freely offers salvation through Jesus Christ His Son. They need to hear that He wants to be a Father near to them and not a Judge far off; that He is reconciling the world to Himself through Jesus, welcoming them home.
“But all things are of God, who reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ, and gave to us the ministry of reconciliation; namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not reckoning to them their trespasses, and having committed to us the word of reconciliation. We are therefore ambassadors on behalf of Christ, as though God were entreating by us: we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf; so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:18-21 WEB)
Anytime you are feeling down, you can initiate a celebration of the Father. It will cleanse you from unbelief, refresh your spirit, fill your heart with hope, and energize your body and soul!

Abba God Knows What you Need
For all who are panicking, fearful, or worried because of finances right now, this reminder is for you.
“And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.” (Matthew 6:7-8 NKJV)
Don’t let dire situations intimidate you into simply reacting by the flesh.
Decisions made out of fear will not produce the best outcome.
Pray with the understanding, and pray in tongues. These are your weapons! Ask in a straightforward manner what you need, without feeling like you need to flatter Him before He will grant your request.
Your confidence must be in Jesus’ blood that has made you the righteousness of God.
“For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:32-33 WEB)
In the same sermon, Jesus made it a point to repeat this truth for our benefit: Abba God already knows what we need. We don’t have to beg for what He has already prepared for us.
A responsible earthly parent will prepare milk for his crying baby. He knows his child’s daily schedule and will anticipate the child’s needs ahead of time. Surely our omniscient Abba God knows when to give us what we need!
Keep your eyes on Jesus and continue to receive God’s wisdom and knowledge as found in the Scriptures. This is what God counts as precious. He will add the other necessities to you. The Holy Spirit will lead you and doors will be opened for provision to come your way. When God makes a way for you, the miraculous style of it will astound you!

How Good Do you Think God is?
“What if there are fifty righteous within the city? Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty righteous who are in it? Be it far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn’t the Judge of all the earth do right?” Yahweh said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place for their sake.” Abraham answered, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, although I am dust and ashes. What if there will lack five of the fifty righteous? Will you destroy all the city for lack of five?” He said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” He spoke to him yet again, and said, “What if there are forty found there?” He said, “I will not do it for the forty’s sake.” He said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if there are thirty found there?” He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.” He said, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord. What if there are twenty found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the twenty’s sake.” He said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the ten’s sake.” Yahweh went his way, as soon as he had finished communing with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.” (Genesis 18:24-33 WEB)
How good do you think God is?
Abraham was afraid to ask the Lord to spare the whole city for the sake of his nephew Lot.
He treaded carefully and bargained the number down from 50, to 45, 40, 30, 20, then finally 10 righteous persons. Abraham stopped there and probably thought that 10 should be enough to spare the cities.
What happened in the end? Sodom and Gomorrah were still burnt to ashes because Abraham did not ask for the cities to be spared even if there was only 1 righteous person.
Do you have a mindset like this: “A wretched sinner like me should not be too greedy. I will just ask God for a small morsel of blessings and hope that He would be merciful towards me.”
Such thoughts indicate a lack of revelation. God’s immeasurable blessings will abound in your life not based on your obedience and good works, but because Jesus’ blood that was shed at the cross is a massive overpayment for your sin debt. You are now counted so righteous that God can be generous towards you.
To act as though you have to beg God to bless you a little bit just shows that you don’t believe that God has completely forgiven you. It makes you unable to benefit from Jesus’ finished work at the cross because you don’t believe in the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness. Instead, you are hopping that your works and obedience are enough to merit you some blessings.
“Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Behold, I, Paul, tell you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing. Yes, I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. You are alienated from Christ, you who desire to be justified by the law. You have fallen away from grace.” (Galatians 5:1-4 WEB)
How awful it is to be alienated from Christ and be unable to profit from His finished work at the cross. Your trust in law-keeping and works to justify yourself chokes the supply of grace.
The result? It is like living in a dry desert, seemingly cut off from God’s goodness. You will feel stressed, burnt out, angry, and bitter.
It is so much better to rely on God’s grace. Believe that He is infinitely good towards you because Jesus has overpaid your sin debt. Expect God’s favor in every situation, and confidently ask for good things to happen for you. When you see people with a need, pray for them, expecting God to help them because your prayers are effective. This is the type of faith that honors Jesus’ sacrifice at the cross!

Our Patreon community is currently on a Bible study series called “My Faith Declarations” which looks at the Spirit-inspired utterances of the authors of the Psalms. They wrote about the trials and tribulations they experienced, so the book of Psalms is very relatable.
