B E N N has been diligently constructing an arsenal of club-convulsing tracks since coming back from London, combining his love of Hard Drum and percussion with traditional Taiwanese instrumentation and an innate sense of rhythm. He also co-founded the label and event project OVER MY BODY since last year, which aims to shine a light on Taiwanese underground talents.
Cybergrime enthusiast personalbrand has been lost in Taipei for 2.5 years, looking (unsuccessfully) for guanxi. His debut ep SHARED UNREALITIES was released in January on TAR. His half of the show is inspired by electric flower cars and funeral strippers. Their recent collaborations will be released on B E N N's next EP via Kepasaparadoks.

BÀI HỌC CUỘC SỐNG : TUỔI TRẺ VÀ CĂN BỆNH MANG TÊN "NHÀN"

Tại sao khi ra trường, có bạn phát triển nhanh chóng; nhưng cũng bạn lận đận mãi vẫn chưa tìm được hướng đi đúng cho bản thân? Bỏ qua yếu tố "nhà mặt phố - bố làm to" và IQ hay EQ cao từ nhỏ, thì phần lớn sự khác biệt nằm ở cách các bạn đã "đầu tư" thời sinh viên của mình như thế nào?

1. Sinh viên là thời kỳ vàng để "đầu tư".

Sinh viên hay được mặc định là nghèo, nhưng thời gian chính là một dạng vốn, chẳng khác gì tiền mặt. Và sinh viên thì giàu cái này.

Nếu bạn đầu tư nó vào hoạt động có ích, nó sinh lời cho bạn bằng những kiến thức và trải nghiệm mới, và cả tiền nữa (nếu bạn lao động).

Nếu bạn đầu tư nó vào hoạt động vô bổ, nó làm bạn tổn thất đấy vì loại vốn này đặc biệt, mất là mất hẳn, không lấy lại được.

Nếu bạn không chịu đầu tư, bạn chậm phát triển. Ráng chịu!

Chuyện ngủ hai giấc hoặc chơi ba ván game online hết veo 4 năm đại học là hoàn toàn có thật! Rất nhiều trong số 200.000 tân cử nhân thất nghiệp năm 2017 sẵn sàng chứng thực điều này.

Sinh viên được coi là đối tượng được xã hội quan tâm với đủ thứ ưu đãi, áp lực sinh tồn với phần đông chưa cao do ở Việt Nam, phần lớn sinh viên vẫn được bố mẹ bế và "đút ăn" đều đặn bằng những lệnh chuyển tiền. Lại đang ở thời kỳ sung sức nhất cả về sức khoẻ cũng như khả năng hấp thu cái mới, nếu bây giờ bạn không đầu tư, bao giờ bạn định khôn lớn?

2. Món sinh viên cần ăn nhất là gì? Ăn "hành".

Thay vì thời gian rảnh rỗi ngoài giờ học ngồi xem anh kia cặp với chị này thì hãy xông ra ngoài và năn nỉ người ta hãy "bóc lột" mình đi!

Đừng sợ bị bóc lột, mà hãy biết sợ nếu mình không có gì để người ta bóc lột!

Bị "bóc lột" càng sớm, càng thậm tệ, bạn sẽ thấy mình càng giá trị, và cái giá trị nhất đối với sinh viên là hiểu được một điều giản dị: Đời không phải là mơ, và amateur là chết!

Bạn đi phục vụ part-time ở quán lẩu được 15k/ giờ thì đừng nghĩ đơn giản là chủ quán trả cho bạn 15k/h vì công sức lao động mà hãy nghĩ rằng chính là bạn đang trả cho chủ quán 15k/h để được học thực hành các môn: thế nào là thao tác đa nhiệm (multi-task handling) và làm việc nhóm dưới áp lực (teamwork under pressure). Mấy ông bà chủ dù có tệ đến mấy nhưng họ đều là thầy cả đấy, họ sẽ vô tình dạy bạn những điều mà ở nhà trường, các thầy cô dù có cố tình cũng không dạy được.

3. Vô tư, nhiệt huyết nhưng đừng để bị lợi dụng!

Tôi vẫn cực kỳ tin tưởng rằng: sinh viên chưa phải thời kỳ thích hợp để cống hiến cho xã hội. Bởi vì muốn cống hiến, bạn phải hoàn thiện bản thân trước tiên và có những giá trị phù hợp mà xã hội cần.

Tình nguyện là rất tốt, nhưng giữa trưa nắng ra đứng phân luồng giao thông hoặc đứng nắm tay nhau làm hàng rào người thay cho 1 sợi dây thừng là......chưa cần thiết. Đó trước hết là nhiệm vụ của lực lượng cảnh sát giao thông và thanh niên xung phong - những người được trả lương để làm công việc đó. Còn bạn được bố mẹ nuôi trước hết là để...... đi học.

4. Hãy "đầu tư" khôn ngoan và có chọn lọc.

Một vốn kiến thức toàn diện khác rất xa với một bảng điểm toàn diện. Khi phỏng vấn, rất nhiều bạn không vượt qua được câu hỏi của mình: Vì sao điểm các môn chính trị bắt buộc của em lại cao hơn rất nhiều môn chuyên ngành? Và mình thì coi ứng viên đó là "không biết lựa chọn trọng tâm và sắp xếp thứ tự ưu tiên" - yếu tố tối quan trọng khi đi làm bất cứ công việc gì.

Hãy xác định môn nào là "core" (bắt buộc) - môn nào là "optional" (tuỳ chọn) để đầu tư thời gian và sức lực tương ứng với nó. Mình đã chọn chỉ học đủ để đạt điểm qua với tất cả những môn mà nghĩ rằng "không quan trọng" (useless) và dùng thời gian của các môn đó lên thư viện học môn khác hoặc làm việc khác cần thiết hơn.

5. Nghĩ lớn nhưng làm nhỏ trước.

Bố hay hỏi tôi: "Đố con tờ 100đ có giá trị nhất khi nào?". Và câu trả lời là: "Đó là khi con đang có, 999.999.900đ. Thiếu đi 100đ - mơ đi mà thành tỷ phú." Thật vậy, mọi điều vĩ đại đều bắt nguồn từ những cái nhỏ nhoi không ngờ. Một điều khá buồn cười là phần đông sinh viên Việt Nam rất mê đọc sách self-help, loại sách cung cấp ít kiến thức nhưng nhiều động lực. Vậy thời sinh viên mà còn thiếu động lực thì bao giờ mới thừa?

Nhiều bạn bây giờ nghĩ lớn quá, toàn nghĩ đến chuyện làm ra triệu đô mà bỏ qua giai đoạn kiếm được triệu đồng. Đừng quên, dù có là Big Data thì đơn vị cơ bản vẫn là kilobyte (kb). Hãy chịu khó làm những con kiến chuyên nghiệp trước khi tính chuyện thịt mấy con voi.

Một trong những câu hỏi tuyển dụng ưa thích của tôi là: "4 năm đại học, ngoài học, em làm được cái gì?". Tôi thích một bạn có bảng điểm khá hoặc vừa phải nhưng có 1- 2 năm làm bán thời gian ở một cửa hàng tiện lợi hơn là một bạn bảng điểm toàn giỏi nhưng chưa-từng-làm-một- cái- gì. Vì ít nhất, bạn đi làm thêm kia, ngoài kiến thức đã giao tiếp với nhiều người và có nhiều thực tế cuộc sống hơn một người chỉ biết học. Đừng đùa, điều đó rất quan trọng!

Và sau cùng, hãy biết yêu thiết tha tuổi trẻ và sống có trách nhiệm những tháng năm rực rỡ của chính mình, các bạn sẽ thấy mỗi ngày qua đi giá trị biết nhường nào....

Living on in fear (Lee Yee)

Hong Kong people have been living on in fear. Contrary to the saying that since the implementation of the National Security Law, violence has been curbed, whereby peace has been restored and normality has returned, everyone, including law enforcement officials and those who have shown support for the law on orders, has been living on in fear. One of my friends, a journalist, said if one craves living on and working as usual, one should stay oblivious of the National Security Law, which will bring calmness and transcend fear and emotional entanglements. Contrariwise, getting overawed amounts to helping those in power that enacted the National Security Law gain their purpose. Yet sadly, by and large, the Chinese Communist Party(CCP) has had its way instantly.

Human fear is constituted by two elements: experiences and unknowable future.

Take the pandemic that has been ravaging across the globe and resurged in Hong Kong as an example. Firstly, COVID-19 keeps the world in fear because of the horrible experiences that it spreads fast and extensively without a trace, with the contracted and carriers showing no symptoms initially, and sustains a pretty long incubation period. Secondly, its resurgence and scale are both unpredictable. Precisely, the experiences and the unknowability have put a halt to the Book Fair, which was supposed to start tomorrow, and made all economists incapable of forecasting the world, China and Hong Kong’s economy. So people live in fear, for they do not have a clue how their lives are impacted by the economy.

Even though it is said that China’s legal system is being perfected day by day, that extradition to China is not hair-raising, that there will be very few cases in which the suspects are extradited to China, that the Chief Executive will keep tabs on the cases, that most cases will be heard by Hong Kong judges…those tranquilizers, which cannot pacify Hong Kong people, cannot even sedate the advocates who put forward the above pretexts for the experiences that there are a lot of uncertainties, flexibility and possible manipulation with National Security Law making breaches of law unknowable. Experiences and unknowability bring about fear.

Under a system in which state power is unchallengeable, the objective of enacting laws is to get the people intimidated. A despotism can definitely do so if it wants to slap the people down.

Sanctions from the U.S. could be actualized, but its intensity and scale are unknowable. If they are applied to big banks in Hong Kong, it will a disaster. Based on experiences and unknowability, officials and the pro-establishment camp are bound to be frightened.

The overwhelming majority of Hong Kong investors chose to put money into Hong Kong in the past for good experiences and knowability. In terms of experiences, business operations were not bothered by politics, and were benefited from the simple taxation, free economy and foreign exchange. When it comes to knowability, the implementation of common law and case law were not totally dependent on judges’ interpretations on laws and were free from political manipulation, therefore were comparatively predictable. It was not without reason that other cities were unable to squeeze in among the three international financial hubs known for adopting common law - New York, London and Hong Kong.

Since the National Security Law taking effect, not only has the number of emigrants increased, but there have also been signs that foreign investments will haul off while Facebook and Google were rumored yesterday to consider withdrawing from Hong Kong in the wake of the fact that quite a number of foreign internet companies have announced suspension of dealing with requests from the HKSAR government for users’ data. If these two most influential global companies pull out, the unknowability of the future economy of Hong Kong will become knowable pessimism.

Freedom from fear is most fundamental among the Four Freedoms proposed by the late U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt. Being free from fear is a prerequisite for freedom from fear of saying something wrong, freedom of religion and freedom of pursuing a better life.

In view of the experiences with the CCP and Hong Kong communist regime, and the uncertainties of the articles of the National Security Law, Hong Kong people and investors cannot stay away from fear. The protesters on the frontlines last year also admitted that they feared, but they went head-on against it for carrying on the movement, crystalizing in the end a new Hong Kong spirit named “mutual destruction”, which means being free from fear in protests. The primaries of the pan-democracy camp last weekend showcased to the CCP and Hong Kong communist regime that thousands of Hong Kong people would still come forward with a big NO even if a machete is pointed at them.
