The “Three Arrows” policy proposal, as Han calls it, aims to better connect Taiwan with the world by "going global."
The proposal includes the implementation of a bilingual education starting from the first year of elementary school, as well as giving all university students the chance to participate in a one-year study abroad program with public funding.
Han dodged a question when asked about the potentially heavy price tag, leaving young voters skeptical about Han's empty rhetoric and hollow promises.
—
“I am a citizen of Kaohsiung City. He broke the promise of not leaving Kaohsiung as the mayor to run for the presidency. How can we young people trust any promises he has made now? There is now a precedent - he has betrayed the trust of Kaohsiung citizens,” One student told me.
Another said, “His language doesn't really connect with young people, such as his use of metaphors. Maybe it connects with older generations. To us, it seems very distant. It’s hard to take what he says seriously. Young people even take it as a joke, what he says is hard to believe.’’
—
“I know you all want to laugh at me. Please just laugh out loud.”
Speaking at the youth forums in Taipei, Han spoke candidly to the crowd.
His last-ditch appeal to young voters: Just trust me, I am a “good hearted person.”
“I know what you see in me is all negative. I don't want to justify (argue) it. I can only tell you this: I am still a good hearted person.’’
Han then took about two minutes to recite MacArthur’s Prayer for His Son from a paper.
“Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid...”
The young audience giggled.
