As were now only accepting Accelerator applications from AI and Blockchain founders, its important to be aware of the environment these startups are growing in. In the past two years, Taiwan has been rapidly catching up to the global AI wave and is quickly becoming the region’s defacto AI talent hub. With healthy and natural conditions, Taiwan has gradually become an AI hub of Greater Southeast Asia (Taiwan + Southeast Asia). Compared to other major Greater Southeast Asian countries, Taiwan has two advantages: AI talents and an industrial environment. According to AppWorks’ newly released 2019 first half version of Taiwan AI Ecosystem Map, Taiwan’s AI ecosystem has been shaping up well with 28 startups & 12 habitat providers. AI startups have been segmented into computer vision, elements, automotive, fintech, healthcare, voice, marketing, and robotics. AI habitats have been classified into accelerators, research hubs, promoters, community builders, education, legal, and VCs. Notably, we’ve also witnessed the increasing integration of hardware and software, specifically as it relates to marrying Taiwan’s traditional manufacturing prowess with its growing AI capabilities. The map will be updated every half year to adequately capture the sheer pace at which the industry is evolving. 【Southeast Asia is Reaching Critical Mass】

Recent research by Bain & Company shows the region’s investment ecosystem has developed critical mass and is entering a new phase of growth, with at least 10 new unicorns slated to come into existence by 2024.

Although investment in Southeast has been relatively slow compared to the region's average growth of 7% per annum, it seems like domestic and international investors are starting to catch on. A growing and increasingly affluent middle class, with rising rates of internet and mobile penetration have created the perfect storm for tech startups to thrive--a ripe environment that many have compared to China 10 years ago.

A collective push by all ASEAN members to build out their startup ecosystems, specifically as it relates to the necessary support and infrastructure for incubation, will only continue to fuel startup activity.

That said, tapping into this lucrative market opportunity of 650 million people is no walk in the park. Success will only be hinged on companies' abilities to navigate across multiple cultural contexts, while attracting the best talent to leverage technical advantages, if not just execution speed.
