For one night Elton Brand enjoyed a reprieve.
For one night Brand left behind all the losses in rebuilding and tasted what it's like to be a champion.
Of course he had to go to Minneapolis on Monday night and watch his college team to do it. Reality returned quickly, not to mention embarrassingly.
Brand's experience watching Duke's national championship victory over Arizona contrasted sharply with what he experienced 24 hours later at the United Center.
That's when an announced sellout crowd of 21,749 spent the entire fourth quarter cheering for Detroit guard Jerry Stackhouse to top 50 points en route to a record-breaking 57 points in a 110-83 Pistons blowout.
When Stackhouse stylishly cracked 50 on a breakaway reverse dunk with 2 minutes 41 seconds remaining, those who remained in the stands cheered loudly. Then the action deteriorated into a playground game with Pistons passing up open shots--some of them on breakaways--to set up Stackhouse. Fans booed A.J. Guyton as he dribbled out the clock, depriving Stackhouse of one more shot.
Stackhouse still did plenty of damage, finishing with an NBA-season-high and Pistons franchise-record 57. He also eclipsed Michael Jordan's United Center record of 53 points, set against Detroit on March 7, 1996, and tied a building record with 21 field goals.
"Guys wanted the record more than I did," Stackhouse said. "They made the extra effort and that typifies what this team is about."
That effort dominated coach Tim Floyd's postgame comments--or, more accurately, the lack thereof. Floyd angrily ripped his team, rendering only Brand and Fred Hoiberg immune.
"It was a pathetic effort," Floyd said. "Our fans deserved better than that."
Those fans gave Stackhouse a standing ovation as he exited with 6.9 seconds remaining.
"If our fans were enjoying it based on everything else they saw from our club that they paid to come watch, then so be it," Floyd said. "I do have a problem, not from their end, but from our end with that guy going to the rim every time he wanted to go to the rim. I had a heckuva problem with that."
Floyd might have even a bigger problem with Ron Artest's assessment of Stackhouse's game.
"It was cool watching it from the bench," said Artest, one of the many defenders Stackhouse victimized.
The Bulls have lost 13 of their last 14 and were swept in a season series by the Pistons for just the fourth time in franchise history. Their average margin of defeat was 19.8 points.
Here's all you need to know: After one quarter the scoreboard read Stackhouse 24, Bulls 20.
The first-quarter performance tied Dominique Wilkins' mark set Jan. 29, 1988, for most points in one quarter against the Bulls. It also broke Scottie Pippen's 1997 record of 21 for most points scored in one quarter at the United Center and tied Isiah Thomas' and Joe Dumars' Pistons franchise mark for most points in a quarter.
Stackhouse's night marked the eighth time he has topped 40 points this season. His previous high was 46.
Jamal Crawford tied his career high with 17 points to lead the Bulls, who played without Ron Mercer. The guard sat with tendinitis in his right ankle.
STACKING UP RECORDS
Jerry Stackhouse's 57-point performance Tuesday night set several records:
- Pistons' single-game scoring mark: Old mark, 56, Kelly Tripucka, 1-29-83 vs. Bulls.
- United Center scoring mark: Old mark, 53, Michael Jordan, 3-27-96 vs. Detroit.
- United Center field goals made mark: 21, tied Jordan vs. Detroit, 3-27-96.
- Pistons' one-quarter scoring mark: 24 in the first quarter tied Isiah Thomas (three times) and Joe Dumars (once). He outscored the Bulls 24-20 in the first.

Elton Brand said the Philadelphia 76ers' game plan was simple.
Even coming from behind, they made it look easy.
Brand scored a season-high 25 points and had nine rebounds in a reserve role as Philadelphia rallied to beat the Portland Trail Blazers 104-93.
"We attacked. That's really all it was. We attacked," Brand said.
Philadelphia (8-22) shot 75 percent during the third quarter and made 26-of-40 shots after halftime as the Sixers wiped out Portland's 10-point lead in the third quarter.
For the game, Philadelphia made 57.7 percent from the field (45-of-78). The Blazers shot 42.2 percent (35-of-83).
Brand, a former All Star, hit 11-of-16 shots in 30 minutes. Allen Iverson, returning to the lineup after missing the past four games with a knee injury, made 7-of-11 shots and scored 19 points. Marreese Speights hit 7-of-8 shots and was one of three Sixers to score 14 points.
The return of Iverson appeared to give Philadelphia a boost. Iverson's first game since Dec. 16 wasn't easy for the 34-year-old guard.
"Once I got my second wind I was all right. The first couple minutes I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest," said Iverson, who in 31 minutes also handed out five assists and collected four rebounds.
Philadelphia lost three of four games with Iverson sidelined.
"Having Allen back helps. He's a finisher. He can get to the line and get the ball to guy at the right time. We've missed that," Brand said.
Portland (20-13) came into Monday's game having won four consecutive games, all against teams with winning records. Only Minnesota (7-24) and New Jersey (2-28) had worse records in the NBA than Philadelphia.
Brand thought Portland looked past the Sixers.
"If you look at our record, it's easy to overlook a team like us. But we're talented and this is what can happen," Brand said.
Portland coach Nate McMillan, noting that the Blazers gave up 60 points inside the paint and 61 second-half points, was disappointed with his team's lack of urgency after its recent play in wins over Miami, Dallas, San Antonio and Denver.
"We were a step slow all night long. The movement, the ball movement, setting the screens. I didn't think we got to our tempo," McMillan said.
Brandon Roy led Portland (20-13) with 24 points, while LaMarcus Aldridge had 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Portland controlled the second quarter to take a 49-43 halftime lead. The key stretch came midway through the quarter when, with the game tied 36-36, Roy and Dante Cunningham combined to score nine unanswered points to give the Blazers a 45-36 lead.
Portland stretched its lead to 61-51 midway during the third quarter before Philadelphia made its move. The Sixers went on a 13-4 run, then capped the quarter when Royal Ivey hit a buzzer-beating 22-footer to give Philadelphia a 77-73 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Sixers continued their surge during the final period. Over a 13-minute stretch spanning the third and fourth quarters, Philadelphia outscored the Blazers 40-17 to take a 91-78 lead with 6:05 left in the game. The Sixers led by as many as 16 points.
Game notes
Philadelphia has won three straight over Portland and five of its past six over the Blazers. Iverson, acquired by Philadelphia on Dec. 5, is averaging 16.1 points in six games with the Sixers. Since Nov. 11, Philadelphia is 4-18. Roy has scored at least 23 points in 13 consecutive games. It is the longest active streak of 20-point plus games in the NBA. Portland committed a season-low seven turnovers against the Sixers.

A.I. and the 76ers went home losers again.
"It's going to have to be one of the best games ever from us in order to win," Allen Iverson said.
They sure didn't play one against Detroit.
Rodney Stuckey scored 27 points and hit the winner with 8.7 seconds left to lead the injury-plagued Pistons to a 90-86 win over Philadelphia on Wednesday night, the 76ers' 11th straight loss.
New Jersey and Minnesota are the only teams with worse records than the Sixers. The Sixers haven't won since Nov. 18 vs. Charlotte and they've lost by five or less points six times during the skid.
Stuckey had the ball stripped by Andre Iguodala, but he grabbed the loose ball and tossed it in for the go-ahead basket with 1 second left on the shot clock.
Iguodala went for the win, but his open 3-point attempt was no good. He scored 18 points.
Pistons coach John Kuester said Stuckey was the right player to take the shot.
"No question I want the ball in his hands," he said. "You saw a lot of growth in a young man. I've been telling people about how good he can be. He can be one of the best guards in the league and he showed it tonight."
Iverson, once the best guard in the league, scored 11 points in his second game with the Sixers. He hit the tying jumper with 1:06 left that made it 86-all.
Iverson is 0-5 this season -- three losses with Memphis; two with the 76ers. Iverson missed seven of 10 shots from the floor and had three assists.
"It's going to get better," Iverson said. "This is one of these times when you find out what type of character you have as men."
The Pistons won without their top three stars. Guard Ben Gordon sat out with a sprained left ankle, and they had been playing without Richard Hamilton (ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (back).
"Without three of our best players to get a win on the road like this is always a good thing. It will help build confidence," Pistons center Kwame Brown said.
Stuckey and Jonas Jerebko were sensational in the fourth quarter and rallied against a struggling Sixers team looking for a break.
Jerebko made all three baskets in the fourth quarter -- and all three were clutch. He sank Detroit's first 3 of the game after seven misses that pulled the Pistons within one; another jumper that kept the deficit at one; and a 15-footer that gave them an 84-82 lead.
Iverson, who played 33 minutes as he tries to work his way into game shape, tied it for his first big shot in his second stint with the Sixers.
The Sixers blew a prime shot at going ahead when they missed two easy looks at the basket, the second one a tip by Samuel Dalembert that fell short.
That set the scene for Stuckey to come through. Stuckey's emergence was a big reason why the Pistons felt they could trade Chauncey Billups to Denver for Iverson last season.
Stuckey went up for the shot, but Iguodala was in his face to knock the ball free. Stuckey pounced on the loose ball and tossed up a little fade that went through for the winner.
Iverson deferred to Iguodala on the final shot. No good and the Sixers slumped home losers again.
"We got everything that we wanted on that last play and more," Iverson said. "The shot just didn't go in. I'll take that same shot every time. He had a good look."
The Sixers were counting on Iverson's marquee name to serve as a box office. They drew 20,000-plus in his homecoming Monday night, but attendance plummeted to 12,136 against the Pistons. That's just a tick more than the 11,965 they averaged in their first eight home games.
Iverson blocked the first shot of the game, stripped Ben Wallace of the ball at the top of the key that led to a Sixers basket, and intercepted a pass as he was falling out of bounds during a frantic first quarter.
He's still looking to get his legs under him after long stretches of inactivity as a non-factor until the fourth.
Iverson shed no tears nor did he exchange emotional hugs in his first game against the Pistons. He complained last season once the Pistons made him a reserve and eventually had his season cut short because of a back injury.
He did not play in the postseason and the Pistons let his $20-plus million contract expire.
Jerebko finished with 17 points, Jason Maxiell had 12 and Wallace grabbed 12 rebounds.
Dalembert had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Sixers and Brand scored 17 points.
