- It's not often a team misses three alley-oops in one quarter and still wins by 26 points. It's even rarer for the Washington Wizards to start 0-5.
That hasn't happened since they were the Baltimore Bullets.
The Denver Nuggets treated the Verizon Center as their own personal playground Friday night, breaking a three-game losing streak with a 118-92 victory that provided comic relief for the winners and showers of boos for the losers.
"We scored 118; we threw away 20," Denver coach George Karl said. "We play a style where I know we're going to have mistakes, but sometimes we make the mistakes and don't make the defense make the plays. It will be interesting the film we'll put together -- maybe we'll put it to Abbott and Costello."
Carmelo Anthony scored 32 points, including 12 consecutive Denver points in the third quarter. Marcus Camby added 13 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for the Nuggets, who shot 51 percent and rebounded from a 119-93 pounding Wednesday night at Boston.
"We lost three straight -- and this was the game we really needed," Anthony said. "We needed to get our confidence back, get our swagger back."
The Wizards fell to 0-5 for the first time since 1966, when their home was up the road in Baltimore. The third quarter has to rank among the most embarrassing 12 minutes of basketball since the team moved to the nation's capital: Coach Eddie Jordan, who pronounced his team's mind-set as "fine" before the game, watched his team miss 7 of 10 shots, commit 12 turnovers and get outscored 33-11 in the quarter.
"We just weren't disciplined. We didn't stay organized. We didn't rebound. We didn't share the ball. We didn't execute," Jordan said. "It's one of the most disappointing games I've been involved in."
Gilbert Arenas, still laboring on a surgically repaired left knee that was drained for a second time on Wednesday, finished with 18 points on 5-for-13 shooting. He made 2 of 8 3-pointers and is 5-for-32 from 3-point range on the season. He remained in the trainer's room long after the game and was not available for comment, needing treatment after playing 42 minutes on Thursday in New Jersey and 37 minutes on Friday.
"Back-to-back's going to be difficult for him right now," Jordan said.
Caron Butler scored 14 of his 21 points in the first quarter for the Wizards, while Antawn Jamison (6-for-17) and DeShawn Stevenson (0-for-6) continued to struggle from the field. Washington shot 38 percent, only a slight improvement over their NBA-worst 36.4 percent entering the game.
"We need to get our act in order, and we have to find a way to get a win, period," Jamison said. "Not only get a win, but find a way to get this thing rolling because it's not rolling at all. You can see it. When you're out there, you're experiencing it."
The Nuggets had won their first two and lost their next three, but they were in the mood to have fun Friday. They attempted six alley-oops, missing all three in the second quarter but making three others, including a poetry-in-motion twisting reverse slam by J.R. Smith on a feed from Allen Iverson in the fourth quarter.
Smith finished with 16 points and Iverson had 15 points and eight assists, but Anthony had the best run. The Baltimore native's 12 straight points in the third quarter all came on jump shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, as part of a 14-4 spurt that gave the Nuggets an 80-58 lead. Anthony went 3-for-13 against the Celtics, but he was 14-for-24 Friday night.
"'Melo led us tonight. He caught fire," Iverson said. "We just rode his coattails all the way in."

Allen Iverson's biggest assist to Chris Webber didn't come on a no-look pass. It came in words of encouragement to Philly's slumping newcomer.
"Just get your swagger back," Webber said Iverson told him. "That's really what I did. It helped me out."
Webber had his best performance in his four games with Philadelphia, scoring 24 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, and Iverson added 31 points to lead the 76ers to a 98-89 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night.
Samuel Dalembert had 15 points for the Sixers, who won for the second time in four games with Webber in the lineup.
Webber looked a little more like the All-Star the 76ers hoped they were getting in their blockbuster trade. While Philadelphia remained 2½ games behind Boston in the Atlantic Division, Webber gave a glimpse of what he could contribute down the stretch.
"I think every little bit helps your confidence," Webber said. "One day you're averaging a number that many people don't do in three categories and the next day you're worthless. And that's from myself, I don't even care what everyone else is saying."
Iverson, who had nine assists, knew Webber was trying too hard to meet monstrous expectations.
"I just know how tough it is on him," Iverson said. "He wants to play well so bad. He wants to fit in with the team. A lot of times when you're thinking about something like that instead of just playing basketball, you struggle."
LeBron James scored 34 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 22 points and 11 rebounds for the suddenly-fading Cavaliers.
Cleveland's five-game losing streak is its longest of the season. After leading the Central Division for much of the first half, the Cavaliers are sliding back in the Eastern Conference race.
The Cavaliers also dropped their seventh straight road game, losing their composure in the fourth quarter and allowing the Sixers to coast in the last few minutes. The Cavaliers had a season-high 27 turnovers that led to 27 Philadelphia points.
James wasn't too worried about the slump.
"We lost nine games in a row last year and got out of it," he said. "We're not hanging our heads low. I've been through this before and it's only my second season."
James lost his cool after he thought he was fouled on a layup that pulled the Cavs to 83-80. He argued over the non-call and was hit with a technical foul.
The Sixers pulled away from there. Kyle Korver hit the free throw, and Webber hit long jumpers before and after a basket by Dalembert to give the 76ers a 10-point lead.
After making his second jumper, Webber whirled around, smiled and pumped his fist. While his shooting percentage wasn't great -- 11-for-28 -- Webber made a few nifty plays that showed why the Sixers thought they made a steal of a deal to get him from Sacramento.
Webber struggled in his first three games with Philadelphia, shooting a combined 17-for-54, and not immediately clicking with Iverson to provide the potent inside-outside game that was expected. Against the Cavs, Webber took a small step toward fitting in.
"There comes a point where you have to have self pride and say, 'I'm going to make this work and fit in," Webber said.
He missed seven of his 10 shots in the first quarter before shooting 50 percent in the second quarter and 60 percent in the third. In the third quarter, Webber's no-look pass in the lane allowed Dalembert to complete a three-point play. On Philly's next possession, Webber came right down and made a 20-footer to give the Sixers a seven-point lead.
"I thank the guys for being patient," Webber said.
With more games like this one, it will be worth the wait.

Iverson dishes 15 assists on top of 44 points in one-sided affair
Allen Iverson feels right at home just in time for the Denver Nuggets' big road trip.
Iverson scored 44 points and dished out 15 assists in leading the Nuggets to their fourth straight win, a 131-107 blowout of the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night.
Carmelo Anthony augmented Iverson's night by adding 29 points in the duo's best performance since the holiday trade that brought them together three months ago.
Now, the surging Nuggets hit the road for five straight games and eight of their next nine.
"This does a lot for our confidence," Iverson said. "To win four games in a row, you get a certain swagger about your game."
The Nuggets have quite the saunter thanks to their red-hot superstars.
Iverson made 16-of-22 shots from the field and Anthony was 13-for-20. And many of the shots were alley-oop dunks and rim-rattling jams that were the product of the Nuggets' suddenly stingy defense.
"They made every shot in the world," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "They are hard to handle when Anthony and Iverson are coming at you like that. They are hard to handle on any night."
At one point, both Iverson and Anthony were 12-for-16 from the floor.
"When you're in a zone, it doesn't matter if guys are on you or anything," Iverson said. "It just feels good. It just feels like throwing rocks in an ocean."
The Suns have lost twice -- by a combined 46 points -- since their 129-127 double-overtime win at Dallas on Wednesday night. They lost to Detroit 105-83 Friday night, which D'Antoni blamed on emotional exhaustion.
"We're still feeling it," Steve Nash said. "It was a big win. We have to get back to the way we were before that game."
The Suns, who got 25 points from Leandro Barbosa, never led in this one and fell behind by 38 points entering the fourth quarter against a team that they might face in the first round of the playoffs next month.
"We didn't have any energy," Nash said. "They played with a lot of heart and energy and we weren't. So I didn't see any way we were going to get back into the game."
Anthony had 19 points by halftime and Iverson had 13 points and 10 assists at the break as the Nuggets took a 70-44 lead into the locker room. Iverson's drive to the basket made it 111-73 heading into the fourth quarter.
"That's another confidence booster for us," Anthony said. "To beat a team like that. You know one of the top teams, if not the top team. To beat a team like that is really a great deal for us. So we can take that momentum from this game and from the previous three games and take it on the road with us."
The Suns had won 24 of 28 road games and had gone 9-1 against Denver in their past 10 meetings. They trailed 37-25 after one quarter and it only got worse from there in what was easily the Nuggets' best game of the season.
The Nuggets shot 68 percent in the first half and the Suns shot just 33 percent.
"They played great," D'Antoni said. "We're in a little bit of a funk right now. Discombobulated. We have the regroup a little bit."
Denver has struggled all season to get any cohesion because of injuries, illnesses, trades and suspensions. The Nuggets have started to put it together lately, and this was the night it finally all came together for them.
Anthony drew the foul and some of the loudest cheers of the night when his third attempt at a putback resulted in the whistle, and his two free throws made it 109-73 in the waning seconds of the third quarter.
Iverson said the Nuggets knew they'd have to start quickly and play relentless defense.
"That team can blow you out and they can score in bunches," he said.
For once, it was the opposition that did both.
