義工奇遇記＃2－British Red Cross Clothing Shop

上回分享過我在NHS疫苗中心當義工的經歷
這次要說說我的另一個服務機構－British Red Cross

在英國的街道上走一趟
總不難發現各所Charity Shop的蹤影
除了香港人較熟悉的救世軍(The Salvation Army)
還有投入國際救援的Oxfam與British Red Cross
致力發展醫療科技的Cancer Research UK與British Heart Foundation
關注兒童權益／動物福利的The Children's Society與RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)等等

由於某些商店會將賣不掉的陳列品送過來
附近街坊亦踴躍捐贈不同物品
所以我們這所Clothing Shop也算是包羅萬有
透過出售二手衣物、書籍、玩具與家品來籌集善款

每星期我也會抽一天時間來這裡做義工
兩個月以來也學習了不少技能
例如在鋪面運作Cybertill處理帳目
在樓上倉庫把收集回來的Donation作篩選
處理好Gift Aider＊的捐贈
把破舊的衣物分成三類：Clothes, Household, Shoes/Bags/Belts
量度每袋Rag的重量再將其轉售給Ragman (收買佬)
剩下較簇新的衣物則以蒸汽將皺摺燙平
利用Tagging Gun在適當位置掛上標籤
然後跟據店鋪準則訂定價格
最後按種類、顏色與尺寸排列貨品
有時候還會幫忙佈置櫥窗
替Mannequin換裝
轉換一下玻璃櫃裡的布偶與擺設

雖然只是一間小小的店鋪
這裡的義工卻來自世界各地
牆上貼滿我們的照片
每人也擁有一個印上名字的專屬咖啡杯
大家當值時有說有笑
閒時分享自己生活上的種種趣事
令我每星期也期待回來跟大家相聚
這份義務工作擴闊了我的社交圈
也為生活帶來了新鮮感與滿足感
雖然未能夠賺取一分一毫
但有些得著是難以用金錢來衡量的

下次再談談我在另一處當義工的體驗
要是你剛剛到埗英國又未急於找工作
參與義工行列既可以把經驗寫進履歷
亦是融入當地、結交朋友的好開始呢

I remember that one out of many occasions, my mother would give up an opportunity for herself, just so she could attend to her children's needs, like my sports day. Every year she would make sure that she was there at school because she knew how important it was for me to see her there at the tracks as she was my pillar of strength. I believed that when I see her, I could run faster and beat the odds. All the medals I won, the Olahragawati titles for 2 years in a row, was because of her!

It's tradition in Taiwan to give a gift of cookies or sticky rice to friends and family when a new baby joins the party. Thanks to But. we love butter for creating these boxes and making it happen.
