Today, we’ll be making a popular snack and breakfast item amongst the Chinese community in Singapore. Chwee Kueh 水粿 is loosely translated as “watery rice cake”. The kueh (pastry part) is made mostly using rice flour, and it is served with chye poh (preserved sweet turnips) on the top. Take note that you’ll need to have moulds to shape the batter for the kueh – cupcake moulds would work too.
Serve your chwee kueh with a generous portion of chye poh and sambal chilli for a Singapore breakfast experience at home!

One of our local breakfast favourites, this is something that every Singaporean loves with a passion!
Chwee Kueh literally means water cake. It is a type of steamed rice cake topped with preserved radish (chye por). The kueh itself itself tastes light and soft with the fragrance of steamed rice, chye por gives it the savoury finish. One thing to take note is that the chye poh needs to be washed 2-3 times so that it’s not too salty. Serve it on it’s own or with your favourite chilli sauce!
