SUNHAT / RA’ONG ☀️ Our ancestors referred to the sky as the big sunhat dome, and all earthly creation lay under it ☁️ In the late 1960s My aunty Sina’ Rang wrote the words for this sunhat “Selamat Pakai From Kelabit Girl” (happy wearing, from a Kelabit girl”). Her sister, my aunty Lasong, did the threading of the beads. The beads were a gift from Tony Masonbee who was group headmaster of Baram schools. Sina’ Rang was a student at the school whilst her sister was a cook. The pattern, made of abstract designs and words is typical of basketry patterns of the era of 1960s. They were keen to weave and bead messages that reflected their newly found literacy skills in English and Bahasa ☁️ all that info was passed to me by my mum who is a researcher & also through my cousins kakak Tracy and Bann (Sina’ Rang’s daughters). The hat is now a collection of the British Museum. Kinda lovely how it’s come a full circle and I’m so happy to have it on the cover of my latest album, Sky Songs.
