PK Tips #1: Creating Magic
A lot of people have asked me about my creative process and how I come up with magic. Here are a few exercises that may help:
Exercise #1: Use a "Wouldn’t it be cool, if…” question. Ask yourself, what type of effect would you want to create. What is a dream effect? Try to think of it that way. Once you have the concept, you can then start to list out all the possible methods to accomplish the result.
Exercise #2: Think of an OBJECT that you would like to create magic with. For example, coffee, paperclip, gum, money, ring, watch, and etc. Write out all the possible things that that OBJECT could do in our everyday life, and then turn those ideas into magic plot.
Ex: Let’s say the OBJECT is pencil. We all know that a pencil writes. When you write, the lead gets shorter and shorter. Maybe the pencil could sharpen itself magically. But how?
Exercise #3: Visual vs. Angle vs. Practical: Focus on TWO. We all want to have a dream effect that is visual, angle proof and completely impromptu. There are some in the market but it is rare. Even today, we are still trying to find the best way to do ACAAN or Card Thru Window. But if you can accomplish all three, then you definitely have a gem!
Ex: Card Through Window. Think about these two versions on which one would you rather have:
1. Gimmick version: Super visual, don't have to worry about angle, requires special gimmick and setup ahead of time
2. Impromptu version: Not visual, angle sensitive, but impromptu
Hope these exercises help with your creation process. Write down below your favorite effect that you have come up with and list out whether it is VISUAL, ANGLE PROOF, and PRACTICAL or all 3!
