Because there is no Planet B!
Today is the official opening of our brand new Green Common in Harbour City, fourth overall and our first in Kowloon. To call this a fantasy come true is no exaggeration. Not just my dream, but the collective dream of lots of people who love wholesome plant-based food and champion the sustainable food movement. It is most fitting that this milestone is taking place on the eve of Thanksgiving.
Hong Kong is known to be a gourmet paradise, and Harbour City is known to be the #1 trend-setting shopping & dining destination of the city (particularly among tourists). So it is perfectly expected that you will find Le Cafe de Joel Robuchon and Laduree from Paris, the authentic Tsukiji Sushi from Tokyo, Al Molo by New York celebrity chef Michael White, and steakhouse powerhouse BLT to be among the renowned culinary brands in this iconic shopping mall.
So what the heck is Green Common doing here? Foreign celebrity chef? Not available. Proven legacy? How about just 18 months of operating history. Lucrative business model? Sorry.....we are a social venture that prioritizes impact over profit.
The opening of Green Common means a non-foreign, non-Michelin-star, non-seafood, non-meat, non-brand-name concept is entering the world of culinary giants in the heart of consumerism.
Add all this up and we have two possibilities:
1. The braintrust and management at Harbour City made a gigantic mistake by believing in the fake rosy, overhyped "Natural Plant-Based Food is the Future" picture drawn by this overzealous David Yeung guy;
Or 2. The braintrust and management at Harbour City are absolute genius and made a visionary move by leading all Asia and the world into the Future of Wholesome & Sustainable Food and Lifestyle.
Green Monday is about awareness-raising, movement-making and culture shift, while Green Common is about empowerment, enablement and is an experience showcase. The Green Monday / Green Common team has done our part. It is up to YOU to decide whether the verdict will be scenario 1 or scenario 2.
For saving my face (and my team's jobs), and for the good of our future generation, let's work together to make scenario 2 happen. When you shop or dine at Green Common, you are not just patronizing at another restaurant or business. You are supporting the change that the world needs to see!
We need to be that CHANGE! Because climate change is here! Because we have a U.S. President-elect who denies climate change! Because inhumane factory farm practice is everywhere. Because people are eating their way to illnesses and chronic diseases.
And last but not least, because there is no Planet B!
P.s. Today is also the official day that we bid farewell to the "dark age" when vegetarians were regarded as fifth-class citizens
