The world faces many crucial challenges related to oceans and climate change, and none of us can solve them alone. Luckily, Taiwan is a strong partner on ocean issues, with many researchers and organizations eager to make a difference in areas such as marine pollution, ocean and coastal acidification, marine protected areas, and maintaining coral reef and marine biodiversity. Recently AIT Science Fellow Dr. Pai-Yei Whung, traveled to southern Taiwan to talk with colleagues from several universities and at the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, sharing her experiences working in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and introducing the U.S. Our Ocean Initiative. Dr. Whung spoke of many “jewels” in Taiwan’s ocean sciences efforts, including a long-term monitoring station for coastal ocean acidity in Taiwan, which has collected over thirty years of data! With Taiwan’s help, along with cooperation from other regional and global partners, we can begin to make a difference. What environmental and ocean problems do you see that Taiwan and the U.S. could work together to solve?
