Schools are celebrating Racial Harmony Day today. This past year, racial harmony has come under the spotlight. Several racist incidents went viral, provoking strong reactions and soul searching about the discrimination that various groups encounter in Singapore.
The public debate has sometimes been uncomfortable. But it has been helpful in airing the issues, and reminding us of the fundamental importance of racial harmony to our nation.
Our racial harmony is an ongoing process, evolving with each generation. My own reference point is the race riots that happened on this date in 1964. It showed me what could happen if we failed to uphold racial harmony, and that has shaped my worldview.
With each generation, however, this topic takes on different aspects and complexities. Also our discussions are increasingly influenced by what happens elsewhere, in very different societies.
We mark Racial Harmony Day each year not to proclaim that Singapore has ‘solved’ this problem, but to remind ourselves this is something we need to continue working hard on. 56 years after independence, race remains an urgent and sensitive issue for us. – LHL

Art has also fallen prey to politics.
Since the sweeping National Security Law was imposed in Hong Kong last year, there's been the virtual disappearance of protest art, the cancellation of a film screening about the 2019 protests, and a very public debate about the upcoming M+, a museum touted as Asia's answer to the Tate Modern.
Despite the new political climate, organizers of the Asian edition of Art Basel -- the world's largest art fair -- are confident the lucrative trade fair will stay. Meanwhile, grassroots artists reconsider how far they can push back to political pressure.
Artist Kacey Wong tells me: "Hong Kong right now is the most dangerous place, more dangerous than Beijing -- it's because of the flexible red line. In Beijing, everybody knows what we can talk about and what cannot be mentioned. But in Hong Kong, nobody knows what that dangerous topic really is."
Here's our report.

Since it is the first post for the #wellnesswednesday series, let's talk about an essential topic: intellectual wellness.
So what is intellectual wellness? It is the ability to be open to new ideas, think critically, and recognise one's creative skills. In simpler words, intellectual wellness is finding ways to expand knowledge and skills. Intellectual wellness is vital as part of personal growth to become a more mindful and better-rounded individual.
How can you cultivate your intellectual wellness?
✦ Start a new hobby
✦ Learn a foreign language
✦ Read different book genres
✦ Do crosswords or sudoku puzzles
✦ Play games of strategy
✦ Improve your skills for learning & studying
✦ Writing down your thoughts of journal frequently
✦ Debate an issue with a friend, but choose the viewpoint opposite the one you hold
✦ Interact with the world around you - travel, visit a museum or watch an educational movie
✦ Do the opposite of what you usually do - take a different route to work or watch a movie you wouldn't be interested in.
✦ Meet and interact with people from different countries and backgrounds - you will be amazed by the stories they share
There are hundreds of fun things you can do to cultivate your intellectual wellness. Which of these options would you add to your list?

Given the continued virulence of the virus, it is still unclear when is the reopening date for 2021. These decisions carry enormous social and economic implications and will have lasting effects on educators, on children and youth, on their parents – especially women – and indeed on societies as a whole.
My parent group chats is abuzz with these speculation – especially those who have been sending their kids to Kindergartens and/or private schools. With many losing jobs or getting huge pay cuts at work, the question on whether they can continue paying for their kids school education is on their minds. Pleas for rebates and discounts has been a continuous debate for most and even for us, while waiting for news from our school, we are now contemplating whether we should one, pull them out and try to apply for government schooling, two, homeschool and hire private tutors which is a bit more cost friendly or three “wait and see” method.
There are pros and cons for all these choices above, but at the end of the day, we want what’s best for the child. How are our children going to manage physically, emotionally and mentally with whatever decision we make?
What are the other possible solutions or options? Is there a possibility of hybrid learning and/or online schooling elsewhere that will be accepted by the school later on?
Joining me today is Dr Goh Chee Leong, CEO of R.E.A.L Education Group REAL Schools International & Private who is the perfect person to discuss this topic with. He is a consultant Psychologist for MENSA Malaysia and carries a wealth of experience in the education sector, and today, we will discuss these hot topics and how to prepare your child to thrive in this new world.
