The Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance has its origin since 1880. A series of unfortunate started on a stormy night before the Mid-Autumn festival in 1880 in Tai Hang village. Villagers were killed by a giant serpent followed by a plague spread out in the village. Many of the villagers died because of the infection. One night, an elderly saw Buddha in his dream, telling him the only way to drive away the disease is to perform a Fire Dragon Dance and to burn fire crackers in the Mid-Autumn Festival. Villagers then made a huge dragon by straws and covered it with incense sticks. They performed the Fire Dragon dance 3 days and 3 nights in a row and the disease was driven away. Since then, villagers in Tai Hang perform the Fire Dragon Dance for three nights during the Mid-Autumn festival in memory of this incident.
The Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance is now an intangible cultural heritage in Hong Kong which attracted ten thousands of locals and tourists to watch every year. Enjoy the video!
