Last week Chen Sheng-wei (陳昇瑋), Taiwan AI Academy’s CEO and E. Sun Financial Holding’s CTO, passed away from a stroke. This was a big loss to the tech and AI community, and we’d like to take the time to highlight some of his accomplishments for the ecosystem.
He has been dubbed “Taiwan’s AI guru” and “the godfather of Taiwan’s data science” because of his contributions to the community, making data science known as his north star, and growing AI talent. Taiwan AI Academy, for example, nurtures top AI talent through intensive four-month training programs to help industries in Taiwan gain a competitive edge in the AI revolution and industrial development. They offer different tracks depending on the students’ skills and needs, such as programs for technical professionals versus ones for business managers. They have a roster of heavyweight AI experts on the panel of teachers who have teaching experience as well. Taiwan AI Academy has so far cultivated around 6,000 young people around the country in 2 years, according to the academy.
The National Development Council (NDC) had previously recruited him to serve as a government advisor in drafting an open-data policy due to his expertise. One of his latest projects was the Taiwan Renaissance Platform, which was launched earlier this year with the aim of helping Taiwanese businesses upgrade and transfer from their existing, more traditional business models, in preparation for the challenges ahead.
In terms of his background, Chen Sheng-wei received his PhD. in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University and his B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science from National Tsing Hua University. He started his career at Academia Sinica, Taiwan’s top research institute, at the age of 26. In 2017, he helped Academia Sinica to build its first popular science website to make science more approachable to the general public. During his 18-year tenure of service to the country’s research pool, Taiwanese manufacturers, and future workforce, he published over 130 research papers and founded the Taiwan Data Science Society alongside Taiwan AI Academy.
What kind of lessons can founders take away from Chen Sheng-wei?
1. Have a north star: when you have a big, lofty goal to reach, you essentially have a vision for your company. Keeping your north star in mind will ensure that you’re always moving in the right direction.
2. Users first: One of the biggest challenges in the early days of AI was education. The general public viewed AI in the lens of entertainment or sci-fi, which wasn’t that accurate. Chen Sheng-wei educated the public on the true nature of AI and the importance of data science in a format that best suited the public’s UX. The same kind of thinking can be applied to your users as well.
3. Give back to the community: One of the ways that Silicon Valley is so powerful is because everyone in the ecosystem understands the concept of “paying it forward”. Helping other founders and stakeholders will open doors of opportunity in the future. See if you can use the COVID-19 situation in a positive way to help others like Chen Sheng-wei did, for example by taking your data and turning it into content for your users / clients, or by onboarding offline clients affected by the virus to being online to drive sales.
Thank you Chen Sheng-wei for your contributions to Taiwan’s development, may you rest in peace.

YOU CAN DO IT TOO
(English writing below)

On 22nd of July, I posted a video of my Grandmaster’s Dharma discourse. He imparted on how the poor should accumulate resources, and the importance of resource accumulation to our daily living.
A Dharma Sister saw it, shared with me her kind deed in Greece and commented:
“After reading your post, I can’t help but post something too..I also believe in doing more good deeds..I believe it isn’t the quantity that matters, but the intent and doing your best that do. Later on, I learnt that after contributing, we will gain more things..”
My reply:
The expansion of the soul must be the biggest joy after performing a virtuous deed. I think what many people do not realise is the influencing power and initiative behind a good deed.
For example, this Dharma discourse from Grandmaster inspired me to share it with everyone. You shared your act of kindness with your readers, after seeing my post.
What was merely an insignificant deed of virtue became multiple seeds of kindness sowed only because we made the effort to share it with others. This seemingly small act of kindness grows in influence. When the readers implement what they read and go on to perform good deeds, this small virtuous act transforms into a huge one.
When no one asks for our help, we take the initiative to bring happiness to others. We do it everyday, like the prayers of deliverance before our every meal, and act upon what Grandmaster said: be friendly to others. This act of initiative matches the intent and best effort you mentioned.

To put it simply:
The grade of family background that you are born into
How good the food you get to eat
How much you get to use daily
How great is your education
Our physical appearance, figure, health
Our family wealth
The family members we have
How many/little benefactors or difficult people we meet
Our wisdom, wealth, career, interpersonal relations, talents
Whether we marry a good spouse
Whether our children are filial, healthy, happy and can study
Whether we have the good fortune to meet a wise accomplished Teacher to guide us out of Samsara
Whether we can understand the Dharma...
All these and more fall under the scope of Resource Accumulation.
So if you meet with lot of difficulties in this life, aka the perpetual "damsel in distress" with no hero in sight to come rescue you, this means that you fail to accumulate sufficient resources for yourself in your previous lifetimes.
The signs will show up in your Bazi, giving a clear picture of your past and current lives.
Taking the initiative to do good is a very great giving example of putting in our best effort.
Social media is a wonderful platform for us to cultivate resource accumulation and mass positive affinities with the sentient beings.
Some people use Facebook to propagate desires, e.g. where to eat, where to have fun, what they bought, the romance between couples, the kinship between parents and children etc.
I'm not saying you cannot do that, but it would be a pity if you ONLY post that, for you are wasting the opportune affinity to cultivate more good fortune.
When you put up more posts of kindness, and doing away with posts that incite greed, hatred and ignorance, you will realise that you too have the ability to bring joy and convenience to people. You can also help others to eradicate some of their troubles and sufferings, no matter how slight.
The bliss of serenity you experience in your heart is the greatest reward you can present to yourself. It's just that you have never given yourself the opportunity to train this ability.
We are all born talented in something. It is never too late for you to start cultivating your resource accumulation and live a happier life.
The Four Immeasurables:
May all beings have happiness and the cause of happiness
May all beings be free of suffering and the cause of suffering.
May all beings never be disassociated from the supreme happiness which is without suffering.
May they remain in the boundless equanimity, free from both attachment to close ones and rejection of others.

Sir Isaac Newton's 1st Law of Motion:
"An object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line, unless compelled to change its state by an external force."
This reminds me of a how a vacant house has no Feng Shui influence to speak of. Unless a person comes in to stay.
The energy field from the human will stir up the energies dormant in the house.
This interaction will give rise to a good or bad pattern Feng Shui, that subsequently affects the occupant's life.
My job is to create good patterns and disrupt bad patterns.
People and their home Feng Shui cannot start, stop, or change direction all by themselves. It requires some force from the outside to catalyse a change.
I am like the external force as stated in the 1st Law.
But one of the greatest forces that I was taught early by Shifu to deal with...
Is the mental blocks in people.

I sometimes hear these from clients and readers.
"I am a logical person, so I am unsure what to think of Chinese Metaphysics."
This sounds like all geomancers are illogical people. 😄
No, we are thinking people too. Our parents didn't raise us up to be mystical beings like unicorns who poo rainbow.
The years we spend mastering our skills are in no way less comparable to your time in schools.

"I want to keep an open mind, and hear what you have to say."
I have mixed feelings about this phrase, open mind.
Are we getting too westernised in our education, that anything not taught in school is considered unorthodox?
And to understand Chinese Metaphysics, something that's unique to our Chinese culture, needs an open mind?
Must be stifling to live with a closed mind like that.
It sometimes sound like they are doing me a favour when they need to open their minds to listen to me speak. 😄
When I probe further to ask what lead to their clamped minds, I get different answers.
Some blame it on their bad experiences with certain Feng Shui practitioners.
Some had parents/friends/spouses who learnt Chinese Metaphysics, yet these people aren't successful in any way for them to look up to.
A bad student doesn't always mean the teacher is lousy or the school sucks.
Others couldn't give me a logical answer. They just follow-the-herd.
In other words, it was an emotional decision for them to disregard our ancestral ancient wisdom.
Nothing logical about it.

"I am a scientific person, but I believe there is more to Science in this universe. So I'm somewhat curious about what Feng Shui can do for me."
I'm happy that you are making space to take in new knowledge. But some questions.
What Science did you study?
Only those developed by the Western civilisations?
How long and how much did you study?
How about the science that is developed by our ancestors?
Or are you so Ang-Mohdified that you only accept science from the Western world and not those from our roots?
If you formulate a hypothesis that Chinese Metaphysics is woowoo talk, what experiments have you carried out, how many and under what conditions?
Who monitors the experiments and how qualified is the person? Who are your test subjects? What is your sample size?
Or you assume your hypothesis stands as a well-established theory, without all these testing?
That would be disgracefully illogical, my Friend, and no way will you qualify to declare yourself as a scientific person.
Modern science is only about 400 years old.
Chinese Metaphysics spans over 5000 years.
How can a 400-year-old understand something as dense and complex as a 5000-year-old?
I hail from a pure Science background.
If you had spent the same effort as I did, learning from the right Teachers, you too would realise the Science in Chinese Metaphysics, instead of saying "there is more to Science".
Chinese Metaphysics is more scientific than modern Science in so many ways.
If only you know the experiments our ancestors did on themselves to establish this great vault of knowledge to benefit humanity.
My advice: don't be too quick to label others as unscientific or superstitious, when you know and did nothing.

I particularly like this example quoted by a well-known TCM professor and physician, Prof Fan Zheng Lun. He is from China and has about 40 years of clinical experience. He has also appeared in several TV shows to talk about his experience.
He used this simple example to illustrate the difference in TCM and Western Medicine, to students in Beijing University:
My translation:
"When I was lecturing to the students in Beijing University, they asked me what the difference in Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine is.
Simply put, when you buy a watermelon in summer, you want to get a good one. Whether you know how to do it or not, you will hold the watermelon up, and knock on it. You will listen to the sound and examine it.
What are you looking at? You are looking, listening, questioning and feeling the pulse (TCM four ways of diagnosis), aren't you?
I say, if it's a very experienced and veteran watermelon farmer, he would not even need to knock on the watermelon. With a single look, he can tell you that this melon is raw and that melon is ripe. Why? He observes its appearance, and he knows it in his mind.
What does Western medicine do?
They will either cut it up to examine, or extract some liquid from the stem, the top, and the middle part of the melon. The liquids will be sent to the laboratory for analysis, and then they will tell you this melon is ripe and this melon is sweet.
If you ask him whether the melon flesh is firm or mushy, he will need to do an X-ray to know.
But not the veteran watermelon farmer. When he figures out the production place of the watermelon and the climatic weather of this year, he will dare to tell you that this melon has firm and crunchy flesh.
That is the difference between Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine."
A western approach is not always the best way to understand everything.
It is also not the ONLY way to make sense of the world around us.
If you have been misunderstanding our Chinese ancestral wisdom, I say it's high time to build new neural pathways.
We have high brain plasticity.
Live like you own it.
Don't look down on the wisdom of our Chinese ancestors.
I don't subscribe to nonsense like things are fated.
It is always the people that refuse to change.
