World Day Against Child Labour is observed on 12 June every year around the world. The day aims to spread awareness about the illegal practice of child labour that still prevails. The objective of this day is also to spread awareness to eradicate it completely across the globe.

Child labour still exists and children, mostly from poor families, are forced to work in hazardous conditions. Such children are deprived of living their childhood while many also miss the opportunity of attending schools.

Malaysia has ratified The International Labour Organization (ILO) Minimum Age Convention (C138) and Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention (C182). In November 2019, Malaysia also expressed interest to become an Alliance 8.7 Pathfinder Country. Alliance 8.7 is a global partnership focusing on accelerating actions toward achieving SDG Target 8.7, scaling up solutions that work, driving innovation, and leveraging and maximizing the impact of resources to eradicate forced labour, modern slavery, human trafficking and child labour.

It is great to hear that Malaysia is currently developing the first National Action Plan on Child Labour in Malaysia. This National Action Plan will comprise of programmes to intensify awareness amongst the public regarding child labour, protect young workers and enhance national capacity to eradicate child labour including strengthening enforcement, establishing referral mechanism and improving social protection.

實現民主沒有捷徑。香港的命運，從來不取決於一小撮人，而是由社會上每一個人合力譜寫。

多年來，我在社區碰到一個又一個為香港默默耕耘的無名英雄。無奈，在充斥著各種渲染、互相標籤、繼而互相指的大環境下，他們只能靜靜各自打拼，孤掌難鳴。

目前關鍵所在，正是如何將他們凝聚起來，大家此唱彼和，實現彼此的共同理想。

亂局當前，我，立法會港島區1號候選人黃梓謙，不會滿足於街頭衝撞和學院論述，於是捲起衣袖，以自己的熱情、專業與學識回饋社會。

香港要翻身，我們就要爭氣。共同承擔，一起開闢新路，讓香港重見希望。

There is no shortcut to democratisation in Hong Kong. The fate of our city should never and will not be determined by a few, but by every single one of us.

Over the years, I have encountered unsung heroes from all walks of life - heroes who silently labour for our beloved Hong Kong, who are forced into silence and isolation by the strife of labelling and finger-pointing that threatens to consume our society.

The key question right now is how do we attune our voices and ideals, rephrase dissonance into harmony, and rebuild the Hong Kong of our dreams?

I, Gary Wong, LegCo No. 1 Candidate for Hong Kong Island, am not satisfied with endless clashes, theoretical debates, and ideals that stay unmaterialised. I am going to snuff our passion out, keep our abilities hidden, and bottle our knowledge up amidst the current chaos.

If Hong Kong is to rejuvenate, we cannot be complacent. Instead we need to work hard - together - to light ourselves a new path and create new hope.

On an evening in August 2005, while some 200 estate workers were gathering for a Hindu festival at the small temple, one man had only one thing on his mind - escape.

It was the best opportunity for P Ramudu and his heavily pregnant wife A Kalaivany to make a dash for freedom, to escape the clutches of their owner who has forced them to work on the plantation.

The plan was simple. While everyone, including their owner-cum-employer, was busy praying, the young couple would sneak out on a walk towards a better life.

The following is their story - a story of bonded slavery in our midst.

This is our 50th Merdeka anniversary. The country is hoping to achieve a First World status is less than 13 years time. Our standards of life have improved. So has our quality of life.

But still, hidden away from the fast pace of comfort and modernisation, exist families who are still being traded between contractors as though they are chattels.
