We are getting a lot of questions about why we are doing rooted beard with Gimli but not rooted hair with Legolas and we'd like to give you guys an insight to why we made the difficult decision that raises so much doubt.
1. Different Braiding Style
Gimli uses the basic braiding style for his beard while Legolas uses the more complex French braid.
2. Braiding:
Apart from the difficulties of mass production for the braiding, we also faced the challenge that the scalp will be showing if we want to fully re-create Legolas' hairstyle.
The braids are weaved with most of the hair on both sides, it's our concern that with so many strands of hair getting tucked away, the scalp underneath will become really visible.
3. The Comb-Back Hair
Legolas sports a slickly comb-back hair and it's hard to keep rooted hair as smooth. Even with gel, it's still a problem to create that neatly stranded texture.
4. Unnatural Hairline:
With the braiding and the comb-back hair, the entire seam of the scalp and the face will be exposed and we have yet to find a way to make the seam look natural and smooth.
After taking into accounts of all the suggestion and feasibility, we opted to take a step back and stick to sculpted hair for this release because we cannot overcome the technical difficulties for rooted hair at this moment. So ultimately the sculpted hair will have better result than the much anticipated rooted hair. So we hope you all like our Legolas and we look forward to showing you guys Boromir!
