We headed to Langkawi last October and one of the highlights was staying at the The Andaman, Langkawi. Because it is not often that a resort is located smack in the middle of a 10 million-year-old (!!!) rainforest and an 8,000-year-old fringing coral reef!
The Andaman Langkawi is more than just a family-friendly resort as this ranked as one of the most educational hotel stay we ever had. The monkies learnt so much about wildlife and marine life!
Our Langkawi holiday is over but all the beautiful memories remain. Especially that of The Andaman, Langkawi, a super family-friendly beach resort tucked between a 10 million-year-old (!!!) rainforest, the tranquil Datai Bay and an 8,000-year-old fringing coral reef.
Being surrounded by a rainforest meant that we woke up to a rich variety of flora and fauna every single day at The Andaman - species that the monkies (& even me!) have never seen so up close and in the wild. Species like the Dusty Leaf monkey, hornbills, giant geckos, squirrels and flying lemurs. We were even joined by a big monitor lizard in the pool!
But there is one aspect of The Andaman that I was left mightily impressed with - a coral nursery pool for kids (& adults) to snorkel safely in! Actually, it is not meant to be a 'tourist attraction'. But after discovering a 8,000 year old coral reef in its shores that was badly damaged by the 2004 Tsunami, The Andaman embarked on a Coral Conservation project which included the Coral Nursery in efforts to rescue and rehabilitate corals.
Young guests can participate in the Young Marine Biologist Program, where they get to experience a day in the life of a Marine Biologist. The monkies learnt more about Marine life in the Marine Lab, explored shallow reef areas, helped to transplant some corals and ended off with a guided snorkel tour in the Coral Nursery.
This probably ranked as one of the most educational hotel stays we ever had. Not only did the monkies enjoyed the pool and beach, they learnt so much! Thanks, The Andaman, for the delightful stay. We will be back, for sure! 😊
龍磐公園位於恆春東南方，沿著佳鵝公路從鵝鑾鼻向北行即可達。公園是全台最壯麗的崩崖地形，全區是上升的石灰岩台地，由於風雨侵蝕，因而形成滲穴、岩洞、裂溝、崩崖等地形景觀。晚上無光害，也是全台觀星的最佳景點之一。風景區內草原植物遍佈，放眼望去遼闊的綠色景觀，加上其旁湛藍的太平海洋風光，海天一色，令人心曠神怡，每每總吸引遊客的目光，令人流連忘返。在重力的影響下，珊瑚礁石灰岩構成的台地崖出現崩坍的現象。這是本區除了崖錐、崩積土、沖蝕現象之外的一種主要山崩現象。墾丁國家公園內的崩崖都位於珊瑚礁石灰岩的台地邊緣，厚層而大面積的珊瑚礁生成時常有垂直或水平的裂隙，這些發達的裂隙會將珊瑚礁分割成大岩塊，加上水會沿裂隙滲入，進行溶蝕作用擴大裂隙。最外層的珊瑚礁岩塊，在海浪侵襲及重力拖曳下向外側崩落，堆積在坡腳，內側的岩塊曠露在外後又重覆發生上面的作用，造成了今日的地形。風吹沙是風成地形。每年九月至次年四月，沙粒受到冬季東北季風的吹拂，被風向西南方陸地搬運；而被河川及沿岸的潮流攜帶出來的沙粒，則向東北的海灘搬運。如此日積月累進行風蝕和風積作用，山谷裡的沙子被風和水來回的搬運，形成了「沙丘」與「沙瀑」的特殊景觀。但後來因為當地政府修築了一條馬路並在馬路後方種植一大片的木麻黃防風林，此項不當的道路阻隔與防風林設計，使得墾丁的風吹沙成為絕響。砂島生態保護區位於屏東縣恆春鎮屏鵝公路約39公里處，為台灣僅有的一處貝殼沙灘，早期因海灘砂子堆積有如小島一般故稱之，是台灣相當珍貴的景觀資源。
