Q1: HOW DO WE PROGRESS?
PM Lee: We aspire to be among the leading cities like New York, Shanghai, London, Tokyo, Sydney. Yet at the same time, we want Singapore to be our home, where we belong and where our families feel safe and secure, where we build a compassionate and inclusive society, leaving no one behind.
But among all the economic issues we are dealing with, the defining challenge which we face in this era is “disruption”. Because of technology and globalisation, and disruption will happen over and over again, relentlessly.
We can respond to disruptive change in two ways: close ourselves off, and try to stop people from using the new technology; or, embrace change, and let the disruption happen, and adjust to it.
Every industry is getting disrupted differently. EDB, SPRING Singapore, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore - IDA and IE Singapore (International Enterprise Singapore) will work with industries and with the trade associations and chambers. They will develop specific programmes to help companies use new technologies and invest in skills.
