See a Good Future for Yourself
“Don’t let your heart envy sinners; but rather fear Yahweh all day long. Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off. Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path! Don’t be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat: for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.” (Proverbs 23:17-21 WEB)
Do you get envious when you see sinners having a seemingly good life and you are struggling to make ends meet?
Listen: you have a future hope, and that hope will not be cut off. This is God’s promise to you.
When you see sinners prospering through unethical ways, don’t follow in their ways. God’s wisdom will tell you that it never ends well to stray from the righteous path.
We have to guard our hearts and not be sidetracked by the fleeting pleasures of this world.
“The devil, leading him up on a high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. The devil said to him, “I will give you all this authority, and their glory, for it has been delivered to me; and I give it to whomever I want. If you therefore will worship before me, it will all be yours.” Jesus answered him, “Get behind me Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’”” (Luke 4:5-8 WEB)
Satan tempted Jesus to obtain riches, power, authority, and glory in an unrighteous way. Jesus easily deflected the temptation and still receive all these things through the righteous way.
He endured the cross and the sacrifice of His sinless blood redeemed the whole earth and mankind back from Satan.
God is not against you prospering, but He doesn’t want you to prosper through the devil’s ways. There is a right way to receive the world’s goods through Him.
You are born for a higher purpose. Not just to gorge yourself with food and become drunk, indulging every vile craving of the flesh.
The law of this world is that you reap what you sow. If you sow seeds to the flesh through sin, you will reap the mature fruit of death.
Likewise, if you sow to the Spirit through Spirit-led actions, you will reap the fruits
of the Holy Spirit; life and life more abundantly.
How do not we “fear Yahweh”? Not by cowering in fear of divine retribution. It’s simply by keeping your eyes on God—be guided by the Holy Spirit, instead of being driven around by the whims and fancies of the flesh. That’s how we reverentially worship God.
When the world tries to seduce your heart to go in the way of sinners, you can say “no” and keep your heart on the right path.
Do you trust that following the Lord will surely lead to a bigger and better life than going in the way of sinners? What you treasure in your heart will determine the direction you walk in life.
Don’t have the false religious idea that if you serve the Lord it means that you will be poor and suffer a lot in life. God’s children have His blessing and favor upon them.
“He said to them, “Most certainly I tell you, there is no one who has left house, or wife, or brothers, or parents, or children, for God’s Kingdom’s sake, who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the world to come, eternal life.”” (Luke 18:29-30 WEB)
Even if you suffer persecution and losses for God’s Kingdom, Jesus promises that you will receive “many times more in this time”. You are blessed right now in this mortal lifetime, and you will continue to be blessed in eternity. There is a future hope for you—it means that good things are coming, and your future is bright. “Hope” means that the future will be better than your past and present. Believe it!

Don’t look down on me. I was beautiful once. Not only was I pursued by many, I made quite a bit trading securities. At the time, money came easily. One, two million was nothing, so I always wanted to take shortcuts.

When I was young, Taiwan’s economy was just taking off. I worked at a securities firm, and because of my looks, my boss often took me to dine with big bosses. I made at least a hundred grand each month, and when my boss split the profits, it was an easy few extra mils for me. I felt money came without effort, so I hardly bothered to save. Also, my mother was addicted to gambling and constantly asked for money. So, I never had much on me.

My mother had a poor relationship with her parents, so she got married just to leave the household as soon as possible. Unfortunately, her marriage lasted only a few years. I’m not sure whether I followed her path. I also got married young, at the age of 22, and the marriage did not last past three years.
I took care of my two children and mother at the time. My mother would even use my kids to blackmail me for gambling money. I soon ran out of funds, so the father of my children came and took them away. I left my job at the securities firm and became a salesclerk at a department store.

I always say it’s a great misfortune to be successful at such a young age. It was so easy for me to make money in the past that I had a no sense of financial management. I spent every penny I made.
After losing my job, I stayed home and began writing stories online. I always thought that I would make a great comeback someday, but I only ended up becoming more isolated from society. After going through my savings, I was unable to pay rent and even my electric bills. The electricity was shut off a few times, so I had to borrow money from the young social workers at my community center.

The young social workers have this place they keep open for children after school. I would chat with them and they would periodically check on me. When I could not pay rent, I would borrow from them. When they lent me money the third time, they took it out of their own pockets, but realized that this was not the way to go. They started finding me work. I first worked as a janitor in a hospital, and after I passed my physical, I worked part-time at a supermarket.
19. periodically check on sb
20. the way to go
21. janitor

When I was young, my mother was emotionally unstable and relied on medication. I never thought I would one day suffer from panic disorder and also become dependent on medication.
But now, when I come to the community center, I feel relaxed and at peace. I tell them that this is my “Tranquil Heart Temple.” I don’t have the ability to donate, so I would occasionally give them my invoices (for lottery). Now, I no longer want to strike it rich and take shortcuts. I just want to have a stable job, raise my kids, and not have to borrow money from social workers.
24. panic disorder
25. strike it rich
26. go from rags to riches
27. a stable job
