Contra: Hard Corps, also known as Contra: The Hard Corps (魂斗羅 ザ・ハードコア Kontora Za Hādo Koa) in Japan, and as Probotector in Europe and Australia; is a great run-and-gun sidescrolling 2D action-platformer for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive. It was developed and published by Konami in 1994.
Initially, people did not give it much attention, unlike Contra III: The Alien Wars, but over time, people have lauded it and put it high on their lists of favorite games for the Genesis, and 16-bit games in general.
Its main competition on the system is Gunstar Heroes by Treasure. Gunstar Heroes is more accessible and inviting, with its bright color-palette and friendly art-direction, but Contra: Hard Corps's Japanese original version is not prohibitively difficult.
This is the version I played, because you can take three hits, and there are unlimited continues. With perseverance, any average gamer can beat this game, and for that, I am grateful.
After I beat the game, however, I found out that there are about a bazillion endings to the game, based upon choices you make throughout it. For this playthrough, I always selected the first option that was given to me.
This was the first time that I seriously tried to beat the game. I'm glad I finally did. I still like Gunstar Heroes better, but I do like the controls in this game a bit more. The bosses have attacks that are easy to dodge if known about. After some memorization and practice, I think I could beat the North American version.

I do not have this cartridge, but it was played on a real Sega Genesis Model 1 via a Mega Everdrive X7 by Krikzz (https://krikzz.com/store/home/33-mega-everdrive-v2.html). I output the signal via an HD Retrovision cable (https://www.hdretrovision.com/genesis/). It was sent to a Shinybow SB-3729 (http://www.shinybowusa.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=37_49&products_id=433), after which it was split into two signals via two regular male-to-male HD Retrovision cables (https://t.co/NQDb5ByOMb): 1) to my CRT TV, and 2) to my Micomsoft XCapture-1 (https://solarisjapan.com/products/xcapture-1-usb-3-0-hd-capture-unit).
