於1929年全球經濟大蕭條發生後，日本的經濟問題日趨嚴重，失業人數達到300萬人。加上於1920年代日本受到國際上的不公平對待，例如1924年美國頒布《排外法案》，禁止包括日本人在內的亞洲人移民到美國。因此，日本的軍國主義早已如熱鍋上的螞蟻，急不及待藉侵略別國，一方面解決經濟危局，同時重振日本的大國地位。
Japan’s economic problem became serious after the Great Depression in 1929, with the number of unemployment reaching 3 million people. Also, Japan was being unfairly treated on the international level. For example, the US promulgated the Immigration Act in 1924, under which Asians, including Japanese, were prohibited to immigrate to America. Therefore, militarism rapidly rose in Japan to solve the economic crises and re-established Japan’s international status.

於1931年9月18日，駐東北的日軍以中國軍隊炸毀日本修築的南滿鐵路為藉口，向中國軍隊開火，最終於9月19日佔領了瀋陽，史稱「九一八事變」。
On September 18, 1931, Japanese army stationed in Northeast China used the pretext of ‘Chinese army destroying the South Manchuria Railway made by Japanese’ to attack China. Eventually, Japanese army occupied Shenyang on September 19, which was known as the September 18 Incident.

「九一八事變」後，日本繼續加強於中國的進一步侵略，於1932年1月28日發動了「一二八事變」，以保護日本華僑為藉口，進攻中國上海及附近的地區。及後，更於1937年7月7日發動「七七事變」，全面侵略中國。
After the Incident, Japan further invaded China and even launched the January 28 Incident in 1932. Adopting the pretext of ‘protecting Japanese in China’, Japan attacked Shanghai and regions nearby. Later, Japan initiated the Marco Polo Bridge Incident on July 7, 1937, beginning a full attack on China.
