A few months ago, I had the gift and privilege of hanging out with my Suppagood girls and had a life-changing experience learning how good my body felt and how delicious vegan/vegetarian food could be.
Since then, we’ve really tried to go as meat-free as possible, discovering as we go along on what feels good and listening to our bodies.
My birthday gift to myself this year was a morning with my favorite #veganwarrior, discovering the beauty of Vegan Peranakan food. The cherry on top?
A date with my best girl in our favorite zero-waste store The Hive- Bulk Foods.
If you haven’t met Davina Da Vegan, she is passionate, kind, giving, and an hour with her will leave you wanting to do so much better for the world.
She doesn’t preach or shame or guilt you into it. She accepts your truth for whatever it is, bends, makes room, and I have watched her do this again and again, with so much respect as a mama, a colleague and a friend.
The beauty of Davina is also that she makes veganism approachable. In my head, it seemed so complicated, to learn to cook with new ingredients and substitute tried-and-true familiar meat flavor profiles seemed daunting.
What Davina does best is she uncomplicates it for you. As we sat down and ate our home-cooked lunch of popiah, pong teh and pengat pisang, I didn’t feel like I was missing anything at all. Neither did it feel hippie, herby, vegetable-y. Instead it was hearty, soulful, comfort food. Familiar. Just like how grandma would make it.
And that’s what I loved most of all about it. It was that it wasn’t all the jazz and fancy of cooking class, but really just like if we were invited to someone’s home, gathering around the kitchen, laughing, sharing recipes, learning to cook the way my grandma or aunts or mama would teach me. Literally with a chair pulled up for Ella Grace and everyone graciously just working around her as she flitted about the way you would at home, cooking together, a dash of salt here, a taste test there.
The perfect birthday morning, the gift of time and community. These recipes were so simple yet so delicious and ones that I know will be a part of our tradition for years to come.
Thank you Davina. ❤️

Singapore #Fitspo 2015 roundup #19: ERICA TENGGARA
Age: 24
Occupation: Freelance yoga teacher
Instagram: @ericatenggarayoga
Erica practises inversions and hand balances EVERY DAY – as you can see on Instagram. She was very active in school, joining the cross country, biathlon, soccer, volleyball, athletics and touch football team. She also did jazz for six years. Erica had to stop running when she tore her ACL though, hence ruling high impact sports out of her life. That was when yoga came into her life.
She said: Fitness to me means being physically conditioned where you are both strong and flexible. You can be explosive and isometric and you can be totally drug free while doing it.
There are no quick fixes to being healthy physically, mentally and emotionally. You gotta work at it, be patient and allow it to become a part of who you are. Throw the scale away, indulge a little and practise.
Yup, she's rocking the naked truth! #rockthenakedtruth
