Ever wanted to be able to bust out perfect Chinese when ordering at a Chinese restaurant, like I do on my popular YouTube channel Xiaomanyc? To amaze the nail salon ladies with your fluent Mandarin? To finally be able to talk to your Chinese relatives...in Chinese?!
When I first began learning Chinese over a decade ago, I felt SO CONFUSED by teaching material that was totally irrelevant for beginners. My teachers would try to explain minute details about the writing system that didn't make any sense, because I didn't have any idea how the language actually worked!
But unfortunately, because of the myth that "Chinese has no grammar", it too often gets taught directly from the written language in a way that overlooks how the language is actually used. This is made worse by the fact that native speakers sometimes try to teach Chinese how THEY learned Chinese in school -- characters first! -- which doesn't make any sense for us because when they were learning Chinese, they were *already* fluent in the language!
My course will not be like that. Whereas most Chinese courses bore you with endless drills and character memorization, we will be starting with sentences from Day 1, just like how a child would learn. Which is not only way more effective but also way more fun! It's exactly how I would have wanted to learn Chinese myself if I could start all over again, and it's exactly how I go about learning new languages these days.
So I will be compressing my 10+ years of experience learning and teaching Chinese into a 10-week, live Zoom course. I will be teaching conversational Mandarin, as spoken by over 1 billion people around the world, along with lots of fun cultural tidbits along the way and hopefully some guest speakers as well. We'll be doing one 90-minute course per week, along with virtual "office hours" with me scheduled at another point during the week where we can chat about how your learning is going and you can field me with any questions you have.
If you're interested please check out my course website here: https://www.xiaomanyc.com/! Looking forward to meeting you!

Here's a part of a question I got today: "Even though I can understand some of what is being said, I cant come up with words by myself.... I’m so frustrated and almost given up". I love answering your questions on Tumblr, and this one is quite often asked.
Here are my tips:
1. IT TAKES A LONG TIME
First of all, please remember that language learning takes years! It’s a lifelong journey. There’s always an inital gap between knowing words and having them in your arsenal to use upfront without needing to think too much about them. And that’s OK! You’ll get there. Getting all the words in your long term memory takes time.
2. STUDY RELEVANT VOCABULARY FIRST
What you can do is to keep studying words but be sure to make sentences with them that are useful to your daily life. Using abstract example sentences that you can’t relate to or won’t use isn’t helpful, so study and speak about content you find interesting. Your content must be relevant to your interests. It helps to have a partner or a diary you can talk/write to about your daily life, hobbies and interests so you’re constantly using and being reminded of relevant words.
3. YOUR MINDSET MATTERS
Because you’re telling yourself that you are “frustrated and almost giving up”, you already have a negative mindset surrounding your specific target language. You can have all the perfect study methods but if your mindset is not in the right place, you won’t make progress. Here’s a popular video I made about the right mindset to have when learning a language.
4. FIND SOMEONE TO HELP
You might find also benefit in getting an italki tutor. I felt the same way about Chinese for years and only after I forced myself out of my comfort zone to speak with a tutor who I knew was there to help and not judge me, did my Chinese speaking improve. I took lessons for about 2 months and now I’m more confident to talk with friends who can help me (for free lol)

[時事英文] What is 「晶晶體」?
What were you thinking?
2、語碼混用(code mixing)係指語句內的語言轉換(intra-sentential switching)。例如:Actually,寫這篇文章可能不是好的idea,可能會被haters罵。
語碼轉換可視為一種社會現象,亦可根據社會文化的脈絡(sociocultural contexts)將語碼轉換分為兩種:
僅有口頭形式,而無統一的書面用語,其變體亦相當繁複(long time no see、no can do、look see)。
★★★★★★★★★★★★

This week I attempt to learn to speak German solely from Google Translate. By using a combination of Google Translate’s built-in speech pronunciation and the flashcard app Anki, I memorize a bunch of sentences in German in an efficient way with spaced repetition and then try and have a conversation in German with Anja from @Learn German with Anja. This was a super crazy language challenge that honestly changes my opinion on how to learn languages – totally nuts!
