Here’s a little-known fact about me - I absolutely HATED writing when I was in school. But surprise surprise, I am doing all the writing on my blog and social media now. Funny how life turned out. 😂😂😂
And it’s the turn of my boys now… because just how on earth does one teach essay writing, especially to secondary school kids??? All the different types of essay questions from argumentative, narrative, descriptive to even discursive (I had to google that last one), I struggle to even come up with topic-related essay ideas, let alone guide them on how to write a good essay!
So thank goodness for Prune.sg, which is an AI-powered essay writing platform for secondary school students. With Prune, both Ash & Ayd get guided practice and develop their ability to tackle a range of composition types. First, Prune helps them to analyse composition questions with its AI-powered brainstorming tools to avoid going off-topic. Then it helps them to develop creative ideas quickly to maximise writing time during exams. Finally - and that’s the most helpful tool for me as a parent - Prune helps to mark the essay too!!! They get immediate feedback on grammar, vocabulary, and style when they submit their compositions. Wah solid, I like.
You can zoom in on the photo to see Ash’s attempt at one of the essay questions. Yes, I could have just used a photo of Ash & Ayd staring aimlessly at a screen, which will be more IG-worthy. LOL. But I really wanted to show you that Ash really attempted to write an essay based on that and the result was he loved it. He liked how Prune broke down the various parts of the essay into different points by guiding him write down his views in a systematic manner, which really simplified the thought process.
There are tons of online learning tools and portals for pre-school and primary school kids these days but for secondary school kids? Not so many. Which is why I think Prune is truly a fantastic helpline for this group of teens. But don’t take my word for it - sign up and try it out for FREE for one whole month at www.prune.sg/register with my code: CMPRUNEL. No strings attached. 😊

@bazaarman_my: Presenting Josh Kua. With more than 63k followers on Instagram, the musician admits that social media is an easy “trap” for comparing oneself with others. “Certain ‘ideal or perfect’ body types have always been glorified, but the frequency and magnitude of the comparisons are intensified online. It’s especially unhealthy for individuals who may still be learning to love themselves,” he comments. His response to critics is simply, “If they ain’t paying your bills, pay them no mind”, a famous phrase coined by @rupaulofficial. His minimalistic, sartorial style is reflective of his personality. Much like his appreciation for close-up details like the texture of a blazer or the lining of a suit, it’s the subtleties and nuances of @joshkua that make him stand out among his peers.

Nick and I attended a parenting workshop not long after Georgia was born. Lauren was 2 years old.
When presented with the 3 main parenting styles - authoritative, permissive and authoritarian. My immediate thought was that we were ‘authoritative’ - you know, a nice balance of being nurturing and firm with the rules, instead of being an ‘‘authoritarian’ which dictates everything our children do. What an idealistic new parent I was.
5 years on and I just read an article on @theasianparent on how parenting style can feed a child’s greatness (link: https://sg.theasianparent.com/types-of-parenting-styles) and out of the 6 parenting styles, I’m an Organic (free-range) parent. I believe in letting the kids learn independence and decision-making since young, perhaps stemming from how I was parented as a child.
My mother instilled in the spirit of independence in me while pushing for excellence in grades. After she passed away, my dad’s parenting style was pretty much uninvolved. But he trusted me to make my own judgements and quite frankly, to suffer consequences on my own. It made me the person I am today.
I’m still learning in my own parenting journey and while I’m consciously not pushing my children hard on grades, my tiger-mumness rears its head from time to time. It’s hard to avoid when you’re an Asian parent. Thousands of years of emphasis on education, since Imperial China - to be a 状元 (champion) is celebrated.
But don’t confuse education with schooling. Greatness in modern society doesn’t come only from good grades. Let’s not put the responsibility on schools. Every child is different. They are your children. To #feedtheirgreatness, we as parents play a big part.
Take an honest look - what is your parenting style?
