[How Does a Customer's Need for Progress Create Demand?]
Have you ever wondered what is going on inside someone else's head?
Why do customers who have learned about your product fail to try it?
How can you use marketing to create demand in potential customers who have not taken that risky first step like the early adopters?
The answers lie in figuring out whether your product can actually help someone feel progress. Progress enabling is a core demand-side catalyst in early stage product marketing.
A core piece of the marketing process is understanding how an emotional or mental demand for progress tunes a potential customer's strategy for choosing your product. You may have heard of "Jobs to Be Done" theory. There's a piece of this theory that I have used when talking with founders about how they shape marketing messages and strategies for early stage product.
Take a look at the image. These "levers" of progress making forces are good ways to interpret what a customer might be experiencing when they choose your product. How can you exploit this? There's a conceptual approach and then actual steps.
Conceptually: It's important to approach this by undrstanding that a customer wants to assign a job to your product. In other words, they don't choose your product because it's cheaper than the competitions or because it's blue or red, or big or small. They aren't worried about features. What they are concerned with is, "How does this help me do the thing that I want to get done?"
As the founder, who is also managing marketing, you need to interpret that inner drive, and then translate that back to the customer as a phrase, a story, or a design concept that helps them see that journey in your product.
Okay right, so how do I do that? Good question.
Tactics
1. Find early adopters of your product. You have obviously had early success, that's why you are contributing time, thoughts and money to this marketing project. You need to talk to those early adopters.
2. Ask them to sit down for an interview with you after telling them you would like to interview them about their personal journey in choosing this product. This can be on the phone or through online video, but it's ideally in person. You want to be able to see body language, facial expressions, and feel the tone of the person when you ask them questions about their journey.
3. Work through a series of questions with them that focus on their emotional state and their approach to the product. There might be several types of questions here, but what you are trying to dig for is: "What were you thinking when you chose this product? What were you feeling?"
4. At this point, you want to really get super detailed about exactly what they wanted, how they obtained it and what was the result of that success. Ask them to play a movie in their head, and they are the star of that movie, and ask them to describe, step by step, as if they are in that movie, exactly what happened when they chose your product.
5. Take copious notes about this. Try to interview a series of people in this same manner. Make it a logical process and standardize it.
At the end of this process, you should have a trend. Each of these customers should show you something that is similar to each other customer about the WHY of their choosing.
It should resemble something close to this image. There should be encounters with each of these progress-making forces.
Your marketing story then needs to take the shape of offering the product as a catalyst or an enabler of this progress. No one product will look the same in terms of its storytelling characteristics.
If you want an example of what a progress-making story looks like in marketing, you should watch the video about Snickers that I have put at the end of this post. You should be able to see exactly what I am talking about. The marketing for this product is a story, not about the features of the candy, but about the progress that the customer feels, exactly as he feels it. And the product is simply the prop in that customer journey. It's about experience.
I hope this helps early stage founders understand the forces of progress that are in a customer's life.
Sir Isaac Newton's 1st Law of Motion:
"An object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line, unless compelled to change its state by an external force."
This reminds me of a how a vacant house has no Feng Shui influence to speak of. Unless a person comes in to stay.
The energy field from the human will stir up the energies dormant in the house.
This interaction will give rise to a good or bad pattern Feng Shui, that subsequently affects the occupant's life.
My job is to create good patterns and disrupt bad patterns.
People and their home Feng Shui cannot start, stop, or change direction all by themselves. It requires some force from the outside to catalyse a change.
I am like the external force as stated in the 1st Law.
But one of the greatest forces that I was taught early by Shifu to deal with...
Is the mental blocks in people.

I sometimes hear these from clients and readers.
"I am a logical person, so I am unsure what to think of Chinese Metaphysics."
This sounds like all geomancers are illogical people. 😄
No, we are thinking people too. Our parents didn't raise us up to be mystical beings like unicorns who poo rainbow.
The years we spend mastering our skills are in no way less comparable to your time in schools.

"I want to keep an open mind, and hear what you have to say."
I have mixed feelings about this phrase, open mind.
Are we getting too westernised in our education, that anything not taught in school is considered unorthodox?
And to understand Chinese Metaphysics, something that's unique to our Chinese culture, needs an open mind?
Must be stifling to live with a closed mind like that.
It sometimes sound like they are doing me a favour when they need to open their minds to listen to me speak. 😄
When I probe further to ask what lead to their clamped minds, I get different answers.
Some blame it on their bad experiences with certain Feng Shui practitioners.
Some had parents/friends/spouses who learnt Chinese Metaphysics, yet these people aren't successful in any way for them to look up to.
A bad student doesn't always mean the teacher is lousy or the school sucks.
Others couldn't give me a logical answer. They just follow-the-herd.
In other words, it was an emotional decision for them to disregard our ancestral ancient wisdom.
Nothing logical about it.

"I am a scientific person, but I believe there is more to Science in this universe. So I'm somewhat curious about what Feng Shui can do for me."
I'm happy that you are making space to take in new knowledge. But some questions.
What Science did you study?
Only those developed by the Western civilisations?
How long and how much did you study?
How about the science that is developed by our ancestors?
Or are you so Ang-Mohdified that you only accept science from the Western world and not those from our roots?
If you formulate a hypothesis that Chinese Metaphysics is woowoo talk, what experiments have you carried out, how many and under what conditions?
Who monitors the experiments and how qualified is the person? Who are your test subjects? What is your sample size?
Or you assume your hypothesis stands as a well-established theory, without all these testing?
That would be disgracefully illogical, my Friend, and no way will you qualify to declare yourself as a scientific person.
Modern science is only about 400 years old.
Chinese Metaphysics spans over 5000 years.
How can a 400-year-old understand something as dense and complex as a 5000-year-old?
I hail from a pure Science background.
If you had spent the same effort as I did, learning from the right Teachers, you too would realise the Science in Chinese Metaphysics, instead of saying "there is more to Science".
Chinese Metaphysics is more scientific than modern Science in so many ways.
If only you know the experiments our ancestors did on themselves to establish this great vault of knowledge to benefit humanity.
My advice: don't be too quick to label others as unscientific or superstitious, when you know and did nothing.

I particularly like this example quoted by a well-known TCM professor and physician, Prof Fan Zheng Lun. He is from China and has about 40 years of clinical experience. He has also appeared in several TV shows to talk about his experience.
He used this simple example to illustrate the difference in TCM and Western Medicine, to students in Beijing University:
My translation:
"When I was lecturing to the students in Beijing University, they asked me what the difference in Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine is.
Simply put, when you buy a watermelon in summer, you want to get a good one. Whether you know how to do it or not, you will hold the watermelon up, and knock on it. You will listen to the sound and examine it.
What are you looking at? You are looking, listening, questioning and feeling the pulse (TCM four ways of diagnosis), aren't you?
I say, if it's a very experienced and veteran watermelon farmer, he would not even need to knock on the watermelon. With a single look, he can tell you that this melon is raw and that melon is ripe. Why? He observes its appearance, and he knows it in his mind.
What does Western medicine do?
They will either cut it up to examine, or extract some liquid from the stem, the top, and the middle part of the melon. The liquids will be sent to the laboratory for analysis, and then they will tell you this melon is ripe and this melon is sweet.
If you ask him whether the melon flesh is firm or mushy, he will need to do an X-ray to know.
But not the veteran watermelon farmer. When he figures out the production place of the watermelon and the climatic weather of this year, he will dare to tell you that this melon has firm and crunchy flesh.
That is the difference between Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine."
A western approach is not always the best way to understand everything.
It is also not the ONLY way to make sense of the world around us.
If you have been misunderstanding our Chinese ancestral wisdom, I say it's high time to build new neural pathways.
We have high brain plasticity.
Live like you own it.
Don't look down on the wisdom of our Chinese ancestors.
I don't subscribe to nonsense like things are fated.
It is always the people that refuse to change.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOU TO WIN DESTINY?
READER: I read your posts and watch your videos and I really agree with what you say and what you stand for.
You seem like really know what you are doing.
I was thinking of getting your help but then I saw what your clients and other people online say about you being stern and fierce. That makes me a bit fearful if you would scold me for nothing.
Do you think I should still seek your services?
⋯⋯⋯
I'm just a little nobody.
If you can't even overcome this unnecessary fear of me, what do you have in you to fight this battle against your predetermined Destiny for the next 30-40 years?
I'm a logical person, not an irritable one.
Sometimes what clients fear is my ability to rationalise things so well that they can't "win" my logic and that is when they get emotional.
Emotional about their shortcomings.
Their own inabilities, ego, pride, attachments, fears, past mistakes, bias etc...
But darling, emotions don't get us to success by default.
Just a casual example...
If I say, "You're too fat. You need to lose weight..."
Client A reacts with her heart, "OMG, she just insulted me! I knew it! She think she so pretty and slim and got the right to tell me off! What an idiot! Don't know how to say nicely don't say lah!"
Client B who uses her mind would think, "Omg, she's right! How does she do it despite her age? Must listen to what she say!"
"Your Bazi requires you to be much slimmer. If you maintain this weight, you would never be able to rake in more wealth. Not to mention the health problems that are leeching onto you. This is the Metaphysics way on how to lose weight fast for your Bazi..."
Guess who will listen more to my subsequent advice?
I do not use my ability and knowledge to bully others. I do not think I am superior or use my clients to vent.
If your Life isn't going the way you want, something must be wrong somewhere.
You can't be coming for a consultation expecting to hear only good things for yourself. That wasn't why you needed advice in the first place, isn't it?
My job isn't to convince you of how much I can help you, whether I will change myself to suit you and generally be more pleasing to you.
You should more or less know all these from my FB.
I am only here to tell you where you go wrong and what you can do to get to your goal in the shortest time and most effective way possible.
We all have a standard of thinking how others should behave.
I don't make that my business.
I only care about how you can win this battle against yourself.
There are more than enough Feng Shui practitioners in Singapore. Every one of them has their unique appeal, personality and effectiveness.
You create your own reality.
I can't ask you to trust me if you already don't.
You are never obliged to seek my help when you have a jungle of trees to choose from.
Now just saying the above statement ☝️ will have some people saying I am arrogant.
But do yourself a favour. Go strip away your feelings and think hard about the truth in this whole writing.
