First, we start with the definition of the 3 terms: strength, speed, and power
1. Strength = the ability of a muscle to exert force regardless of time.
2. Speed = the amount of time it takes an object to move a given distance (generally use the “meter per second” as unit)
3. Power = the amount of work performed per unit of time.
Then, followed by some formulas you need to know first in order to calculate the power output for a person;
Force = Mass x Acceleration (F = ma)
Work = Force x Distance
= (Mass x Acceleration) x Distance
Power = Work/time
1. Powerlifter (Strength-oriented sport)
Bodyweight = 100 kgs
Deadlift 1 RM = 300 kgs
Distance from floor to lock out = 0.4 m
Time to lockout = 4 seconds
Let’s see the power output as follow:
Work = mass x acceleration (Gravity because pulling off the ground) x distance
= 300 x 9.8 x 0.4
= 1,176 Newton-meter
Power = Work/time
= 1,176/4
= 294 watts
Relative power output per bodyweight = 294 watts/ 100 kgs
= 2.94 watts/kg
2. Weightlifter (Power-oriented sport)
Bodyweight = 100 kgs
Power Clean 1 RM = 150 kgs
Distance from floor to lockout = 0.65 meters
Time to lockout = 0.6 second
Let’s see the power output as follow:
Work = mass x acceleration (Gravity because pulling off the ground) x distance
= 150 x 9.8 x 0.65
= 955.50 Newton-meter
Power = Work/time
= 955.50/0.6
= 1,592.50 watts
Relative power output per bodyweight = 1,592.50 watts/100 kgs
= 15.93 watts/kg
The difference between the two is the time it takes to move the load. The power clean is faster, so much faster that it generates more than three times the power despite the fact that is half the weight and moves 1.25 times the distance of the deadlift.
work = mass x gravitational constant x distance
