Happy Malaysia Day! So much emotions to unpack today while I reveal these pieces. These three new artworks were created from soil gathered from East and West Malaysia.
I've been working on this project since Nov 2020, when Alvin Teoh, son of Malaysian war veteran, Major Andrew, contacted me asking if I’d want to create artworks to be shown in a documentary about Malaysian war veterans. One of my missions as an artist is to tell stories, especially meaningful ones about history, culture and heritage, so of course I said yes.
From the start, we knew that soil would be the main material to symbolise land that was fought for. Admittedly, there was a lot I didn't know about that the war and the vets - about the pain and reality of war, how it affected their families and lives, and their deep love for the country. I got to meet two vets in person before lockdown, and the rest I met through Zoom. I was also deeply touched by how there were so many Malaysians of various backgrounds who fought for our country - of all races, beliefs, backgrounds, and of Malaysians from East and West Malaysia. Swipe to see a sneaky screenshot I took of them.
As a Sabahan (East Malaysian), I hope these artworks and this documentary will also present East Malaysians as an equal to the West. That is the symbolism of gathering soil from both East and West Malaysia. The documentary will be shown tonight on Astro at 9pm (GMT + 8 ) on Channel 100. Happy Malaysia Day. ❤

Sepanjang kerjaya sukan ChongWei, satu dunia ChongWei merantau untuk bermain badminton, demi bendera di dada. Kadang-kadang pergi dekat, kadang-kadang jauh.
Ni nak berkongsi serba sedikit pengalaman menjelajah jauh. Terbang 30 jam + one way beb!
Sepertimana kejohanan antarabangsa lain, sebelum bertolak ChongWei semestinya berbekalkan Maggi, Milo dan biskut PingPong Hup Seng. Kalo xde, sanggup tak terbang beb.
Selepas menang di New York, sampailah ChongWei di Calgary. Surprise gak, guys. Umpama Cowboy town yang high class. Lambang-lambang cowboy belaka merata tempat.
Serius.
Malam sebelum perlawanan akhir. Tak tahu nak makan apa dah. Pernah try KFC dan McDonald tapi sumpah guys, KFC McDonalds kat Malaysia terbaik! Dah down dah… esok nak lawan Ng Ka Long ni.
Ring… ring… ring
Kawan lama I, Naufal call. Dulu main basketball bersama, dah lama lost contact, rupanya dah bertempat di Calgary. Dia ajak jumpa makan malam lepas tournament. I terus “Apa pula besok?! Malam ni la bro”.
Terus I uber ke rumah dia. (Canada x pakai Grab)
Naufal sediakan nasi lemak rendang ayam. Bini dia masak masak kari kambing. Terkejut I. Kat Lucky Market bole beli kata dia.
Oh my god. Best giler! Meletup perut meneriak kesedapan.
The rest was history. Ng Ka Long langsung bukan lawan di final.
Kawan-kawan sekalian,
Takde negara lain yang ada makanan seenak.
Takde negara lain yg ada Melayu, Cina India, Iban, Kadazan Dusun, Melanau panggil each other bro, abang, adik, ah ne, boss.
Jangan tahu kritik sahaja.
There is still hope for this Country we all love. It’s our Malaysia, our home after all.
Jangan lupa.
Kita semua pernah seketika dulu.
Berikrar di perhimpunan sekolah.
Akan menumpukan segala tenaga and usaha kami…
Demi...
Negara kita… Malaysia kita…
selamat hari kemerdekaan ke 64 🇲🇾
P/S: Memang best pergi negara maju lain. Tetapi lepas 2-3 minggu, memang terindu dan terasa Malaysia lah yang terbaik, tak sabar-sabar pula mau pulang. Setuju?

Giap's Original Video:https://youtu.be/LgAED4TBPN8
After 1975, hundreds of thousands of people from Vietnam got on boats to leave post war. Those who survived the seas made it to refugee camps all over Southeast Asia, from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, to Hong Kong. And eventually, some had a chance to resettle in America, Canada, Australia, and many parts of Europe. This is a story about three friends who found each other after 40 years. I met Giap in New Jersey a few years ago and he asked me to make a video about his life story. I agreed and after publishing it, two of Giap's refugee camp friends, who were also viewers of this channel, recognized him and saw themselves in my video. They reached out and I connected them to Giap. Giap connected his friends Thanh from Los Angeles and Phuong from San Diego together. They met right away. Giap also met Phuong two years ago in Da Nang. But Giap just met Thanh and the three of them were finally together after 40 years.
