I come from very humble beginnings. At my first singing job, which I held on to almost 7 years, I allowed myself to be exploited and had to pay for everything I consumed. Sometimes they even made me pay for my soft drinks and coffee, while the owners raked in millions from all my efforts to promote my shows there. Trust me, nobody went to Bagan for the food or the cocktails. Bagan became famous because of ROZZ.
This is not a complaint. But I DO reserve my right to tell this story when I please, because it DID happen to me. Was I partly responsible for allowing this? YES. Did it sullen my spirits? NO. It just made me determined to work harder so that they would truly miss me when I decided to leave.
And leave I did. When I felt the time was right.
Cut to 4 years later in KL, where I am wined and dined and invited to so many venues, just so that we could entertain the idea of a possible collaboration. This month, I have been thrown so many birthday bashes, my friends and I need a whole month to recuperate from partying.
I am so thankful. I do not take it for granted even for a minute because I know how hard it is to keep going, especially when nobody wants to recognize your efforts and when nobody else sees your vision.
I am very appreciative of everything I have now. Only because every step of the way, I have had to claw and fight tooth and nail, to prove myself over and over again, to every naysayer that dismissed me as a flash in the pan, or worse, a man in dress who had more costumes than talent.
To those of you starting out, do what you must. Pay your dues. WORK HARD. But have a vision for yourself, because there's going to be so many times when you're gonna feel alone, when you feel like there's no support, when giving up, and going back to a mundane life seems to be the best option. That is the time when you need to remind yourself of your vision - because that's the only thing to talk you from going off that ledge.
Believe in your power. And never ever give up.
