Developing Empathy

Why is empathy more important now than ever?
Empathy can be defined as the capacity to understand feel what others experience from their perspectives. It differs from sympathy, the feeling of feeling sorry for someone in a difficult situation. In some instances, the terms overlap as sympathy is an empathetic concern, which includes the desire to see people better off.
Psychologists have identified different types of empathy, two main types being affective and cognitive. Affective empathy refers to the ability to share the feelings of others. It enables us to “mirror” what others feel and detect their anxiety or fears. Cognitive empathy, also known as perspective-taking, is the ability to identify and understand how others feel. Both are needed in effective communication because they help us build emotional connections and relay information to our audiences. Empathy is also essential for collaboration and leadership as one needs to understand and anticipate the emotions and behaviors of others to work with them and lead them to success.
One can see empathy present in all professions. Teachers need it to understand and meet the diverse needs of students. Research shows medical workers high in empathy have patients who enjoy better health. The police need it to feel less distant from people they are dealing with and defuse situations with less physical force. Think about what happens when the police lack empathy with protestors.
Empathy is needed more than ever now. Identity politics, government rivalry, and even the latest health crisis are gradually stripping us of our empathy and compassion, leading to greater tension, division, and conflict. How many posts on social media highlight the need to help one another, and how many spread fear and hate?
Not all hope is lost. We can still nurture and cultivate empathy. We can practice:
1. Active listening: Listen and be mindful of the opinions of others. Don’t merely dismiss every viewpoint different than your own.
2. Shared identity: Learn about people who are different from you. Rather than focus only on the differences, think about what you have in common. Imagine what you would do in their situation.
3. Combating inequality and indifference: Many who have attained higher socioeconomic status (SES) sometimes have diminished empathy because they have less of a need to connect with, rely on, or collaborate with others. This does not mean that all wealthy individuals are indifferent to the needs of others, but they might need to be more mindful about maintaining empathy towards everyone.
4. Reading and changing perspectives: Research shows that reading literary fiction (e.g., To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men) focuses on the psychology of characters and their interaction with the world. These books motivate readers to understand character intentions and motivations, and such awareness can be carried into the real world. However, I personally believe that all books, even non-fiction (e.g., the Diary of Anne Frank), can do the same, and readers should not be restricted by the genre. The point is to read to understand the mindset of others, to think and “experience” life from their perspectives, and to apply these lessons to your own life.
Thus, to help students develop empathy, I have decided to launch a new series on our page: Changing Perspectives In addition to our regular posting of News English, Opinions in Education, and Learning Resources, we will share stories of people from around the world, provide key words, translations, and ask you critical questions to help you view the world from other perspectives! However, thinking is not enough! Develop empathy through reading but also apply it to your lives by understanding and working with others to achieve success.

10 Must-Knows for a Growth Mindset
★★★★★★★★★★★★
1. Know what you want in life. While short-term goals may be ever-changing, you can start by having an overall sense of purpose or change that you want to make. For me, it was initially to have financial stability but eventually transformed to contributing to educational leadership. Having an overall purpose can help you align your short-term objectives with long-term goals, making accomplishing them far more efficient and motivating.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
2. Know that you can solve your problems and make changes in your life. While we all have different problems, and there is no guarantee we can resolve all issues, working towards a positive change will benefit you regardless of the outcome. You must know that you have the capacity for positive change.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
3. Know that you can develop the skills and abilities you need to make changes through consistent effort and the development of your unique strengths. Everyone is talented in different ways but persistence is what develops talents into invaluable skills you can use to empower yourself and achieve your goals. We do not all need to be as talented as Olympic athletes to achieve the success we need in life.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
4. Know that consistently meeting small and realistic objectives that align with your bigger goals and purpose is the most efficient way to achievement. Do not try to accomplish too many things at once or your might not accomplish anything at all in the end. Set realistic goals that you can adjust and achieve a step at a time.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
5. Know that achieving your goals take time and consistent effort. You must make plans and keep schedules to keep yourself from procrastinating. Do not think you can reach your end goal in a week and then be disappointed by your failure. Taking a small step each day will enable you to make great strides in life. You must also prioritize which objectives to meet first and have a plan for doing so. Consult your mentors, parents, and peers, have a discussion, and come up with your own plan.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
6. Know that you may fail along the way, but every failure can bring you closer to achievement. However, know that failing only brings growth when you self-reflect and make changes. Do not just keep repeating mistakes.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
7. Know that role models, mentors, and teachers can take you to the next level. Actively seek out your role models and mentors and learn from your competitors and peers. Actively seek out talented and experienced individuals to guide you and work to earn their trust and guidance. Do not expect everyone to come to you and help you for no reason. Why should they? Be humble and be grateful.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
8. Know that collaboration will enable you to accomplish success on a much larger scale. Every successful person has a partner or a team behind them. There is only so much you can learn and do on your own, and you must work with talented and trustworthy people from every domain.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
9. Know that opportunities are created, not given. By actively seeking, learning, planning, and pursuing ways to accomplish your goals, you are creating new opportunities every day. Listen to advice but do not be limited by boundaries set by others. Take calculated risks and walk your own unique path.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
10. Know that helping others help yourself. When we aid those who are disadvantaged, we are building a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous community. Such a supportive community leads to the exchange of diverse ideas, collaboration, innovation and positive changes, all of which will help yourself. Medical studies have also revealed that helping others enhances our own emotional-well beings. By helping others, you are helping yourself.

(English Version below)

The most shocking lesson - the American classroom.
At the end of the ballet class on Saturday morning, the teacher asked everyone to spin, jump, and dance through the classroom elegantly. One group after another, following the beautiful classical music tempo, no matter what happens, always smiling, and looking fabulous. The class is full of all kinds of students, 8 year old blonde girl, 10 year old Chinese american girl, 12 year old South Asian american girl, 23 year old Korean girl, 27 year old African american girl, 29 year old Taiwanese moi, 35 years old blonde male classmate, 40-year-oldish red-haired temperament hot mom, happy ladies in their fifties ...etc. The teacher is called "Ms. Patricia", who is a sixty-something blonde, the most knowledgeable woman I have seen with super-strong body, the most experienced in teaching, very dramatic, incredibly humorous, and girl, she loves to gossip. She has also been practicing ballet for more than 50 years, and insisting on teaching for six to eight hours a day.
While the very last group was finishing up their turns, the red-haired hot mom lost her balance and fell to the floor, making a bump. She blushed, and smiled a little embarrassed, making this "Voila" gesture, and then stood up. On the other hand I felt a little embarrassed for her, so I smiled nervously and soon turned my head away because I wasn't sure what kind of expression I should've been reacting.
At this time, the teacher walked over, rubbing her both hands together, looking entertained and glanced at the girls in her elite class. She shouted: Girls, what do we do when someone falls in our tech class?
All the girls under the age of 16 started to clap their hands and show genuine admiration.
Ms. Patricia: That's right! We clap! Everyone come together! Applaud!!
The audience applauded and cheered for the hot mom who stood up after she fell.
Ms. Patricia went on: Usually at this time, the teacher will go to the other girls and say...
Acting while walking over to a beautiful girl who is the most advanced in the class, and pointed to the hot mom and said: she tried. She dared to try, risking the possibility of falling, trying harder moves, in order to become better and making more progress.
Then she pointed to other girls, one by one, asking: Why don't you fall? Why don't you try? Why not taking risks? Everyone should learn from her, and we thank her for trying so hard!
I almost burst into tears.
I instantly understood where the confident expressions that have always been on the faces of American classmates came from. Every single moment, doesn't matter what other people think, do not be afraid of falling, not afraid of failure, and only try to focus on this moment of effort, are you doing enough? Because only your effort is important, and nothing else is worth worrying. Falling means you are trying, trying means that you are closer to progress, and feeling comfortable doesn't let you go any further.
I wished that someone had said something like this to motivate me when I was a child who fell hard and using it as a good educational opportunity to encourage everyone else to try. But nothing is ever too late, this is the most shocking lesson (in the best way) I have learned in the United States after almost three years. By the way, in the next couple of days it'd be three years since I moved from home.
Just wanted to share with you, this.
