'Urban Folly – Robot Stillness' takes place in a dark corner with a flat, square mat on the floor next to a black mannequin. From her head, while we go past cheek bones and neck, we see buildings growing down the mannequin as if they are electric wires following a fractal search path until they fade into the black at the bottom. Rather abstract, done in chromium paint, one wonders would it look like dripping wet hair or the roots of an electric tree under the city?

On the head of the mannequin is a headband with a pico-projector mounted on it. It projects the painting Urban Folly, the counterpart of the neon sign with the same name. A robot drawn after the buildings fades in and out so that the buildings very slowly become the robot, which becomes the buildings, which become the robot, which… While playing, the pico-projector speaks a poem about the robot being still inside – a robot knows emotion nor thought – using mock computer commands. The voice is coarse and mechanical.

Visitors are to sit on the mat and put the headband on. They project the image on the wall, aiming between four picture-frame corners, two of which are traditional dragons, the other phoenixes, handcrafted by local artisans. The poem takes six minutes with long pauses and the visitors’ challenge is to keep their heads still to have the projection stay within the frame, which is an exercise to become still inside. Only if the visitor is prepared to pay full attention will the slight differences in the pictures faded in and out be seen...

Protected from a Horse Riding Accident in Iceland

See the cute horse below? I took this photo in 2014 when I was at Laxnes Horse Farm in Iceland with Amilee. It was very cold, with chilly winds blowing that day. The landscape was golden fields, blue lakes and snow capped mountains all around.

We booked a horse riding session and were excited. I mounted my ebony horse, and after some briefing from the instructors, we were allowed to ride on our own, on a huge circular route, back to the horse farm.

Seeing my horse trotting so slowly, I was feeling somewhat bored and wanted it to go slightly faster. As I struck the reins repeatedly on the beast’s back, suddenly, it burst into a wild gallop, as if to say, “You want to go faster? I’ll give you fast then.”

It ran so fast that my feet flew out of the stirrups and now the only things keeping me on the horse were my hands gripping the reins tightly and my inner thighs tightly hugging the horse’s back.

The horse was galloping as fast as those you see knights riding on in movies. I really thought I was going to be thrown off the horse and was hanging on for dear life, with my thighs chaffing and tailbone bumping painfully against the saddle every few seconds. At other moments, I felt like I was flying and defying gravity.

I felt so helpless. There was no one I could call to for help. Even if I shouted, no one would hear me as the next person was so far behind and there were no instructors around.

After what seemed like ages, the horse farm was finally in sight. The instructors waiting at the farm looked worriedly when they saw me and the horse approaching so quickly. They just laughed asking if I was okay, and I laughed too saying I was fine, but really, that was a scary experience.

After the whole experience, Amilee who was on a different horse behind said that I looked really cool riding so fast on the horse. Thankfully she saw the scene from behind and didn’t see my face!

I just recalled this incident yesterday and realized that it can be counted as a near-death experience. A complete beginner like me riding on a horse galloping at what seemed like full speed could be potentially fatal.

I thank God for protecting me and giving me the grace to hang on tightly so that I wasn’t injured at all through the experience. It could have been much worse with broken bones, fractures or worse, a snapped neck.

If you ask me if I would ride a horse again after experiencing that, yes I would! I secretly found it fun. In fact, I did go horse riding again with Amilee in Bali after that. Thank God for a brave, adventurous spirit! 😄

One thing I learned from the experience was that only God can keep us safe. I was in a situation were I felt helpless and there was no one to turn to. Our body of flesh is so fragile and this is a dangerous world. The only thing to do is to pray and cry out to Jesus for help, which I did not do at that time. Back then, I hadn’t matured in the Lord as much yet. Prayer should always be response number one when faced with any danger!

Have a premium drink at Toyama's "Yamaoka-ya”! I visited "Yamaoka-ya Toyama Tajiri Store" in Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture. The rich tonkotsu ramen that you can't get rid of once you're addicted to it ... Some people think that it's a “iekei ramen" because it has a "house" in its name and similar ingredients, but it doesn't use chicken bones at all. It is clearly stated that the "Yamaoka-ya” itself is different from Iekei ramen. Although it is FC, it is a commitment to make soup by boiling pork bones for 3 days at each store. I often visit in Kanto, but this time I visited again in Toyama for the first time. Please take a look at the premium salted pork bone ramen that is full of rich flavor!

富山の『山岡家』へ！富山県富山市の『山岡家富山田尻店』にお邪魔しました。一度ハマったら抜けられない、その濃厚な豚骨ラーメン…屋号に「家」がついたり具材も似ていることから「家系ラーメン」と思う方もいますが、鶏ガラを一切使用しておらず家系ラーメンとは異なると「山岡家」自体が明言されています。FCながらも各店舗で豚骨を3日間煮込んでスープを作るというこだわりぶり。いつもは関東でよく伺っていますが、今回伺ったのは富山では初出店という貴重なお店でした！濃厚な旨味がたっぷりつまったラーメン、ぜひご覧ください！

To Toyama's "Yamaoka-ya"! I visited "Yamaoka-ya Toyama Tajiri Store" in Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture. The rich tonkotsu ramen that you can't get rid of once you're addicted to it ... Some people think that it's a "family ramen" because it has a "house" in its name and similar ingredients, but it doesn't use chicken ramen at all. It is clearly stated that the "Yamaoka-ya" itself is different from Iekei ramen. Although it is FC, it is a commitment to make soup by boiling pork bones for 3 days at each store. I often visit in Kanto, but this time I visited a valuable store that opened for the first time in Toyama! Please take a look at the ramen that is full of rich flavor!
