In hot and humid Singapore, one thing we all appreciate, and some even consider essential, is air-conditioning. 80% of homes and nearly all office and retail buildings have air-conditioning. This consumes lots of electricity, and generates lots of greenhouse gas emissions.
I don’t think we can do away with air-conditioning, so we are pursuing more efficient ways to cool our environment. This Bloomberg Green article describes the district cooling system in Marina Bay South. A centralised cooling plant runs chilled water through a network of underground pipes. It services a large area including Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, and the Marina Bay Financial Centre. This centralised system saves around 40% of energy, translating into lower emissions.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) has introduced requirements for refrigerators and air-conditioners, such as “climate-friendly” labels, and phasing out the use of high-GWP refrigerants. By raising our air-conditioner temperature setting and using energy efficient appliances at home, we can help lower carbon emissions too.
Global warming cannot be solved in one simple stroke. Amidst current preoccupations with COVID-19, let us not forget to work together to make the world a greener, more sustainable place for future generations. – LHL

[Internet of Things Opportunities in 2020]
With technology advancement in all layers of IoT, from cloud computing to sensors and connectivity modules, to LTE and now 5G, the industry is poised with more opportunities than ever before. And with continued reduction in implementation cost, we are close to crossing the chasm to mainstream use, as the world sees more and more uptake from small and medium businesses, what are the opportunities on the horizon?
#Opportunity_One_Device_Enablement
Without device enablement, there will be no IoT. Rather than building an IoT device from scratch, some of the fastest growing startups in this space are building solutions which can enable all types of devices to connect with the internet, building the enablement layer means helping any smart device, machinery, or even household appliances to efficiently connect to the internet. Although the challenge lies in consolidating standards against big brands and country specific regulations, this layer is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 24% p.a and poised to be a US$ 30 billion market by 2023.
#Opportunity_Two_Cloud_Computing
It goes without saying that cloud computing has been one of the fastest growing spaces in the last decade. Companies like AWS/GCP/AZURE provide large data storage capacity and computing power to fuel sophisticated functionality, security, and analytics. The real opportunity here is to apply existing research data with cloud computing and IoT devices to provide results previously impossible to execute. Agriculture is currently at the frontier of these applications, by applying plant nutrition data from Ecology, Philips Lighting’s Growiser Center can monitor, track, and control the environment that influence a plant’s growth, however, manipulating the environment comes at a cost, but by leveraging IoT to optimize the environment whilst balancing the cost, Philips have managed to maximize yield profit and quality for their growers like never before.
#Opportunity_Three_Business_Applications
With steady advancement in technology and investment in the lower layers of IoT, the requirement to explore business applications has become much lower. However, due to the high financial opportunities, the business application layer will continue to be very fragmented. It is up to the founders to study, explore, and consolidate the possibilities that lie within the application layer, and to build something that businesses and individuals can truly benefit from to reap the rewards.
If you are a founder working on any layers in IoT, or a founder that is interested in working with other IoT founders, we welcome you to join our network of over 1,100 founders from around Southeast Asia and Taiwan. The application to join AppWorks Accelerator will open in May, you can check out more information by following this link here: https://bit.ly/3eLDKWk

[Zscaler(ZS)]
[Atlassian(TEAM)]
P.S. 這篇文章會有點hardcore(硬).....
Case study 1: Zscaler(ZS)
Zscaler builds walls around data, not applications. The San Jose company makes cloud-based, next-generation firewalls.
The idea turns traditional network security on its head. Most enterprise security solutions have been built around a security appliance, where threats are pushed to siloed servers. Unfortunately, that model is hopelessly broken.
Plus, appliances are expensive and do not scale well. The only way to add more capacity is to buy more appliances. Unfortunately, that increases bottlenecks and latency; the anathema of the hybrid and cloud-based infrastructure that dominates modern enterprise computing.
More important, appliances have not stopped hackers.
Zscaler claims to operate the world's largest Security-as-a-Service stack, processing 35 billion requests, with 125,000 unique security updates every day. And its cloud architecture means every client, from powerful workstations and laptops, to smartphones and tiny Internet of Things devices, get the same level of security.
When Zscaler finds a threat anywhere, it blocks it everywhere. In the process, customers get better performance and lower costs than security appliances.

Case study 1: Atlassian(TEAM)
1. 有時候從公司的結構, 策略, 去找公司的獨特處, 這樣有時候會更能找到insight(有興趣者可以去研究FedEx成功的秘密).
Anyways.

PLAYA VISTA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Belkin today launched WeMo, a line of modular, Wi-Fi-based products that turn an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch into a remote control for household devices. Consisting of two initial products, the WeMo Switch and the WeMo Motion, WeMo works with the free WeMo app to create a scalable, customizable home control system designed to provide added safety, convenience, and peace of mind.
"WeMo uses familiar technology to create a plug-and-play solution for controlling gadgets and appliances remotely"
"WeMo uses familiar technology to create a plug-and-play solution for controlling gadgets and appliances remotely," said Jamie Elgie, senior director of product management for Belkin. "Designed to address simple automation needs without the hassle or expense of whole home automation, WeMo is an easy and fun way to put your home at your fingertips."
The WeMo Switch is a small device that plugs directly into any electrical outlet and serves as the main building block for WeMo. Once the Switch is connected to the home Wi-Fi network, any device plugged into it can then be turned on or off from anywhere, whether at home or on the go with the WeMo app. The app also enables users to put devices on a timed schedule, so devices will turn on or off at pre-set times.
The WeMo Switch + Motion adds a sensor that reads motion within 10 feet and will turn on or off anything plugged into the switch based on motion. The WeMo app tells any device plugged into the corresponding WeMo Switch what to do when motion is sensed. The app also allows users to create rules or schedules based on customized intervals. For example, turning off a lamp if no motion is sensed in the room after 10 minutes.
WeMo also features integration with IFTTT, an online service that allows you to create tasks combining different Internet-based services from one platform. Through the WeMo channel on IFTTT, you can use a WeMo Switch or Motion to trigger a variety of services, including email, weather, phone calls, Twitter, Facebook, etc. For example, you can set up a motion sensor by your front door and use IFTTT to create a rule that will send a text message to your phone anytime motion is sensed.
"With these two simple devices and the free WeMo app, you can create a variety of tasks or recipes, and integration with IFTTT is just one more way to make WeMo yours," said Elgie. "With WeMo, your home is at your fingertips and there are endless possibilities of what you can create. We are looking forward to seeing what people come up with once WeMo hits the market."
