歐威爾就是寫《1984》和《動物農莊》的作者George Orwell。以他為名的形容詞就是在描寫《1984》書中的內容：由政府所控制的宣傳機器、全面操控社會上的訊息、侵犯個人隱私、對國家與領袖絕對服從及崇拜，以及進行嚴厲的社會控制。
