In May 2019, Taiwan could potentially be the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage. There are major societal forces on both sides of the question on whether same sex marriage should be legalized, and LGBTQ equality should be the norm in Taiwan.
With these questions being faced, there will be a discussion and screenings of two film on these major societal questions at the FCCT on Monday, September 24th.
There will be a screening of the documentary Queer Taiwan, which features interviews with individuals that support and oppose the legalization of gay marriage in Taiwan. The film specifically focuses on the substantial animosity between the Equality Bees and the Family Guardian Coalition, which has only increased as this hot-button issue has become more prominent in Taiwanese society.
A second film on legality of surrogate pregnancy in Taiwan will also be screened. At present, surrogacy is completely illegal in Taiwan, no matter whether the potential parents are straight or LGBTQ. There is hope in Taiwanese that surrogacy will be a turning point for gay-parents, but many in Taiwanese society continue to believe that surrogacy should not be allowed in Taiwan no matter what the orientation of the parenting couple is.
After the films are shown there will be a discussion on these and other gay-rights issues in Taiwan. The discussion will feature Jennifer Lu, Chief Coordinator of Marriage Equality Coalition Taiwan, which is Taiwan's largest LGBTQ NGO working on gender issues and education. In January 2016, Jennifer ran for a Taiwanese parliament seat as a candidate for the Social Democratic Party. As part of her campaign she was able to raise the visibility of LGBTQ issues in Taiwanese society.
Other panelists include:
Phil Robertson Deputy Director, Asia Division, Human Rights Watch
Mr. Robertson oversees the organization's work throughout Asia, especially in Southeast Asia, North Korea and Japan.
Midnight Poonkasetwattana Executive Director APCOM
Before joining APCOM, Midnight worked for Purple Sky Network where he engaged with MSM and transgender communities in the Greater Mekong areas. He previously supported the implementation of HIV and human rights programmes in various countries throughout Asia and Eastern Europe as part of the International HIV/AIDS Alliance.

North Korean Special Forces Simulate a Rapid Assault Against and Capture of an Enemy Island in Response to US-South Korean War Games
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and many of the county's military leaders supervised special forces exercises supported by artillery. The drills involved a barrage on simulated enemy positions from the air and from artillery units followed by rapid landings of special forces personnel by sea and air to capture enemy positions and neutralize remaining hostile forces. North Korea's military often holds military exercises to demonstrate the country's readiness for war in response to joint US-South Korean military drills, and these exercises come amidst America's Freedom Guardian military exercises taking place from August 21st to 31st. The country's new special forces uniforms and equipment were recently unveiled in a military parade on April 15th 2017 and several units appear to already have been outfitted with state of the art combat armor, night vision optics and grenade launchers.
North Korea's special forces remain among its primary military assets, and are the world's largest special operations force at 180,000 personnel. The units have shown themselves to be highly capable with elite training standards, as demonstrated in the 1996 Gangneung submarine infiltration incident when three members of the North Korean special forces became stranded in South Korea. These personnel managed to evade forces of tens of thousands of South Korean soldiers searching for them for 49 days. By the time two of them were finally found and killed they had killed twelve South Korean soldiers and caused twenty seven more military casualties. The remaining operative was never captured and is assumed to have successfully returned to North Korea. Should a war break out and North Korea be able to deploy these forces in large numbers behind enemy lines, be they Japan, South Korea or Pacific nations hosting US military forces, they will almost certainly wreak havoc far beyond what North Korean missile forces and artillery alone could achieve.
By testing the offensive capabilities of its special operations forces North Korea is signaling to its potential adversaries that should they attempt to start war the country's retaliation will come in the form of not only missile strikes and artillery - but also of the deployment of 180,000 elite forces capable of infiltration and sabotage. Should these units successfully manage to open up second fronts behind enemy lines, the result will be significant destruction and chaos which will significantly undermine the war efforts of North Korea's adversaries. Should North Korea's special forces be able to strike key civilian and military infrastructure, they could well have a significant impact on the outcome of a war on the Korean Peninsula and ultimately force the United States and their allies onto a defensive in a way not seen since the Vietcong's Tet Offensive in 1968. Indeed, considering that the first phase of the Tet offensive was carried out with just 80,000 regular Vietcong personnel, infiltration by 180,000 elite North Korean forces against the far more complex and vulnerable infrastructure of modern South Korea and Japan, relative to that of South Vietnam, would cause destruction on a scale orders of magnitude greater than the Tet offensive ever did.

10 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT FUKUSHIMA NUCLEAR DISASTER 福島第一原子力発電所事故
The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster was caused by the massive tsunami triggered by the Tohoku Earthquake on March 11th, 2011. This was a Level 7 nuclear event, comparable only to Chernobyl.
1. Unheeded Warning
Before the disaster even happened, there were industry experts who warned of mega tsunami-generating earthquakes hitting the area every 800 to 1100 years, with the next one being overdue. But those in charge dismissed such warnings.
2. No Good Robots
During the crisis at Fukushima, high radiation levels at the plant made it desperately hard for human workers to do what they needed to do.
Back in 2001, the Japanese had actually developed extremely capable robots that were deemed technical successes, but then a government task force concluded that a Chernobyl-scale disaster was never going to happen in Japan .
The program was shut down and the robots were dismantled or donated.
3. Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant
The Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant was the closest power plant to the earthquake epicentre, yet it successfully withstood the barrage.
While the Fukushima Plant had sea walls up to 5.7 meters, Onagawa had it up to 14 meters.
4. Wrongful Evacuation
Due to miscommunication between the evacuation authorities and the experts who were analysing the fallout, many residents were evacuated from pretty safe areas right INTO the radioactive plume.
5. Evacuation Deaths
More people were killed by the evacuation process in Fukushima
than by the actual earthquake and tsunami, the disaster itself.
People died of fatigue, exhaustion, illness, suicides - losing their homes, not knowing where they would end up, cramped evacuation centres; the whole ordeal was taxing.
6. Geiger-Counter Hobby
After the Fukushima disaster, random radiation hot spots were discovered in unexpected locations.
Radiation levels as high as those in the no-go zone were detected as far as some Tokyo suburbs. This prompted many Japanese residents to take up a new hobby - walking with Geiger-counters through their city or village in search for random radiation levels to report.
7. Animal Guardian
55 year old Naoto Matsumura is the only man brave enough to live in Fukushima’s no-go zone. After the initial evacuation, he returned back
to take care of the animals that were left behind. Not just his animals, but everyone’s.
8. Mutations
There were a few small scale Fukushima discoveries.
9. Human Radiation Effects
No one died from radiation exposure in Fukushima.
And contrary to a well-publicised, yet poorly-executed, study
that made the rounds in 2015, thyroid cancer rates in Fukushima children were actually lower than the national average.
10. Disobedient Hero
Masao Yoshida was the manager of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant and on March 15th 2011, he lead a brave group, now dubbed ‘The Fukushima 50’ into the radioactive trenches.
With cooling systems crippled and having run out of fresh water, Yoshida decided they would pump seawater straight from the ocean into the damaged reactors.
Then corporate headquarters (TEPCO) ordered him to stop the seawater injection. They didn’t want the corrosive seawater to permanently damage their reactors.
Feeling his superiors were inept for risking a colossal radioactive fallout, Yoshida disobeyed the direct order and continued with the seawater injection.
Many experts now agree that his actions on that day
arguably prevented a much greater catastrophe.
