遊戲背景是 1518 年神聖羅馬帝國巴伐利亞的一個小鎮，主角
是一名藝術家，在修道院製作圖書繪本。這個年份和地理位置
是重要的，因為就在前一年 (西元1517)，馬丁路德在布蘭登
堡貼出了「九十五條論綱」，批判教會腐敗問題，引發喧然大
波，並促成宗教改革。
1522 年，聖經被翻成德文，使一般人更容易直接接觸基督宗
教教義。1525 年發生「德意志農民戰爭」，各地農民起義，
反貴族、反教會，動亂死傷逾十萬人。神聖羅馬帝國從此一蹶
不振。
基本上，只要有上述歷史知識就可以玩了。如果對於基督宗教
或當時歷史有較多認識，會在遊戲中發現更多細節與趣味，但
就算不知道也無礙遊戲進行。建議不要事先閱讀任何劇情雷，
不然可能減少遊戲樂趣。
本款遊戲最為人稱道的是它的美術風格，模仿了中世紀的插畫
，非常精美。還有一個特色是它的字型設計：遊戲中人物的對
白使用了多種字體，對應了說話者的身分和語氣。例如，飽學
之士對話是較正式的字體、印刷廠老闆則是當時的活字印刷體
等 (我玩的是英文版，不確定其他文字是否有類似設計)。
值得一提的是，本遊戲擺明致敬了 Umberto Eco 的小說「玫瑰
的名字」：遊戲開始畫面出現可以擦拭的拉丁文書頁，就是「
玫瑰的名字」書中小說的首頁拉丁文版 (我用網路翻譯對照過)。
遊戲中還出現許多拉丁文書籍內容，大多引自真實書籍。結束
後的製作名單跑完，還列出參考文獻。滾動太快無法一一細看，
但算算大概有四、五十篇，這倒底是寫論文還是製作遊戲啊 @@
有趣的是，本遊戲名稱 Pentiment 源自義大利文 pentimento，
這是指：經過修飾的藝術品上所留下的先前痕跡。遊戲開頭的
「擦拭」動作顯然影射了遊戲名稱。其實可以說，整個遊戲就
是在談隱埋在歷史或史料中的多重 pentimento。
本文無雷，說到劇情只有一點想提醒：雖然本遊戲標示的是冒
險類，但玩起來比較接近視覺小說。玩家控制的主角要到處和
人談話，並做出選擇。但在推進劇情和解謎之餘，玩家不妨從
對話和互動中，試著體會歐洲中世紀各階層人民的生活與想法。
本作對於人物的刻劃非常仔細，每個出場人物 (即使只是平民
小人物) 都有自己的背景、經歷和喜怒哀樂。我玩到後來已經
不急於推劇情，就當作美術精緻的互動圖像小說在看 XD
另外想提一下，本遊戲是黑曜石娛樂公司發行，製作人和編劇
是 Josh Sawyer。老玩家也許知道，他就是 Fallout: New
Vegas 以及 Pillars of Eternity 的製作人。他在完成 PoE 2
之後，花了數年時間，製作了這款 Pentiment。我後來才知道
他大學雙主修歷史和戲劇 (好像不意外)。
總之，雖然個人相當喜愛本作，但這遊戲可能並非適合所有人。
對於喜歡中世紀繪本藝術風格，而且可接受對話探索式互動
小說遊戲的玩家，相當推薦本遊戲。但如果不喜歡情節緩慢的
遊戲，或者只想求「正規解」的解謎遊戲玩家，可能就不適合
本款遊戲了。
