Aptly found in the midst of the Little India heritage conservation area at Shin Boon Hwa Food Centre is Hainan Chicken Rice Ball which has a rich history of 104 years.
The Chicken with Double Ball comes with two very well shaped hand-rolled rice balls (got technique one ok, don’t play play), a seemingly small but large portion of boiled chicken and the signature herbal soup.
As the chicken is already drenched in dark soya sauce, all you have to do to make this meal complete is to dip the chicken into the handmade chilli sauce!

History has it that the popular chicken rice balls were shaped and compact into spherical for convenience whilst keeping it warm. Also easier to pack and go is another theory explaining why the Hainanese shape their chicken rice into balls, which makes perfect sense if you think about it. And with such long period of tradition preserved, the chicken rice ball is renowned and closely connected to culinary in Melaka. Here is one that is halal, and fits right into the festive theme.
If anyone is wondering, I'm in the quest to find the best chicken rice ball in Melaka and if you are a fan of chicken rice ball, the hashtag is #sycookiesxcrb
