Allen Iverson scored enough points to catch Shaquille O'Neal but not enough for the Philadelphia 76ers to catch the Charlotte Hornets.
Iverson scored 39 points to take over the league scoring lead from O'Neal but the Hornets found the range in overtime and dealt the 76ers a 117-110 loss that dumped them into seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
Elden Campbell scored seven of his 18 points in overtime for the Hornets, who blew a 21-point first-half lead and needed a reverse dunk by Eddie Jones off an airball by Chucky Brown to force the extra session with 2.9 seconds left in regulation.
"We missed our free throws in the fourth quarter (5-of-9) and missed a big box-out at the end to win the game," Philadelphia coach Larry Brown said. "We talked about boxing out during the timeout. Eddie Jones was incredible for them."
"That was luck. I saw the ball was short," said Jones, who scored 28 points and did a credible job on Iverson.
Iverson had given the 76ers a 100-98 lead with a 3-pointer with 6.8 seconds to go. But he scored only four points in overtime, missing 21-of-35 shots and 7-of-16 free throws overall, as his play resembled the wild offensive game he displayed as a rookie.
"The kid is awesome," Hornets interim coach Paul Silas said. "They ran plays and set great picks for him and he made us pay."
"In overtime, they made some shots and we missed some," Iverson said. "We just didn't execute like we'd like to."
Nevertheless, Iverson is averaging 26.61 points while O'Neal, the superstar center of the Los Angeles Lakers, is at 26.47. On Wednesday, Iverson's 76ers host the Detroit Pistons and O'Neal's Lakers entertain Portland.
If the Sixers (27-22) win, they will be no lower than seventh in the East. They could finish sixth if Milwaukee (28-21) loses at New Jersey or as low as eighth if they lose and New York (26-23) defeats Miami.
"Seventh or eighth means we are still in the playoffs," said Sixers center Matt Geiger, who had 22 points and 13 rebounds but was saddled by foul trouble in trying to defend Campbell in overtime. "We played well enough to get in. ... We will just have to get started tonight with playoff basketball. It is upon us."
David Wesley had 19 points and 10 assists, Bobby Phills scored 17 points and Eldridge Recasner added 16 for Charlotte, which was eliminated from the playoff race Monday but bounced back to beat Philadelphia for the first time in three meetings this season. The Hornets scored the most points against the 76ers this season after combining for only 136 in the first two games.
"We know we're a playoff team," said Jones, who was acquired in a mid-season trade. "We may not be in the playoffs, but we know we're a playoff team."
After a 4-11 start that led to the resignation of coach Dave Cowens, Charlotte (25-24) has gone 21-13 under Silas and visits Boston on Wednesday.
"It's an important game," Silas said. "We're going to do all we can to win it. It would be nice to finish the season on a winning note."
Campbell opened the overtime scoring with a free throw to give the Hornets the lead for good and Wesley drilled a 3-pointer. Philadelphia's Aaron McKie made a jumper but Campbell responded with a nine-footer for a 106-102 lead with 2:59 to go.
Iverson made two free throws but Campbell hit another jumper. McKie's basket cut the deficit to 108-106 with 1:56 left before Phills, Campbell and Jones scored in a 38-second span to seal it at 114-106 with 43 seconds to play.
"We went to Elden a lot late in the game trying to foul Geiger out," Silas said. "He made several big shots in the overtime."
Chucky Brown scored 14 points and Campbell grabbed 11 rebounds for the Hornets, who shot 47 percent (39-of-83) from the field and made 32-of-39 free throws. Campbell and Wesley made six steals each and Jones added five and four blocks.
Rookie Larry Hughes scored 13 points and McKie and Eric Snow added 12 apiece for the Sixers, who shot 45 percent (42-of-94) and held a 48-44 rebounding edge. George Lynch grabbed eight rebounds and Snow handed out eight assists.
The Hornets shot 57 percent (12-of-21) and held the Sixers to just 27 percent (6-of-22) in the first quarter, opening a 36-16 lead. Jones scored 12 points in the period and his dunk gave Charlotte its largest lead at 49-28 with 4:09 left in the second quarter.
The Sixers closed to 58-42 at halftime and Iverson and Geiger scored nine points each in the third quarter to help cut the deficit to 77-74. Hughes' three-point play gave Philadelphia an 80-79 lead with 10:08 left in the fourth quarter.
"If we could have guven the energy we gave in the second half in the beginning of the game, we could have won this game," Brown said. "We can't expect to play this way during the playoffs."

The road to the NBA Finals in the Eastern Conference goes through First Union Center.
With Allen Iverson firing away from the outside and scoring 37 points and Dikembe Mutombo patrolling the paint with 18 rebounds and seven blocked shots, the Philadelphia 76ers posted a 108-95 victory over Boston, severely damaging the Celtics' playoff hopes.
The 76ers (54-23) clinched first place in the Eastern Conference for the first time since 1982-83, when they won their last NBA title with Moses Malone and Julius Erving.
"The last team that won the East was so long ago," Iverson said. "The players were so much different, the game was so much different. It was more physical then. It's physical now, but it was a lot more physical then because you could do a lot more things with your hands. It's sweeter right now because I'm part of it. I'm happy for my teammates, my coaches and the fans of Philadelphia."
The San Antonio Spurs own the top record in the NBA at 55-22, one game ahead of Philadelphia.
"I'm thrilled that we won the conference and the division, that's an accomplishment," said Sixers coach Larry Brown. "I don't think we could be any prouder of our team. We won the first two series the last two years without the homecourt, so I don't think we could take anything for granted. We just have to keep trying to play better and try to improve."
The loss dropped Boston (35-43) 2 1/2 games behind Indiana (36-40) for the eighth spot. The Pacers rolled to a 100-78 rout of the Washington Wizards on Monday.
The Celtics again proved to be no match against a team they would face in the first round. Boston has lost six straight meetings with Philadelphia, including all four this season.
The Sixers scored the first eight points of the game, built a 14-point advantage at halftime, led by as many as 19 after three quarters and outrebounded the Celtics, 52-30.
"They killed us on the boards," said Celtics coach Jim O'Brien. "We had nobody to contend with Mutombo tonight. We were actually just trying to tip it away from him instead of just grabbing it. That just didn't work out."
Once again, it was Antoine Walker, Paul Pierce and little else for the Celtics, who lost for the fifth time in seven games. Walker scored 26 points and Pierce finished with 23.
Iverson returned after sitting out two straight games with tailbone and hip ailments and hit 13-of-33 shots from the field and 10-of-12 from the free throw line.
"It is tough to really stop a guy like him, you just try to slow him down," Pierce said. "We didn't do much of that either. They just killed us on the boards and got to every loose ball."
Iverson cranked up 16 shots in the first quarter alone and scored 14 points as the Sixers held a 28-24 lead.
George Lynch and Aaron McKie combined for 15 in the second quarter when the Sixers outscored the Celtics, 30-20. Iverson had just four points in the quarter.
Six different players contributed as the Sixers closed the half with a 15-6 run to increase their lead to 58-44.
Jumaine Jones ignited the spurt with a 16-foot jumper, Iverson converted a pair of free throws and Lynch hit a short jumper. Mutombo, who finished with 12 points, followed with a driving hook, Eric Snow hit a 15-footer, McKie connected on a 3-pointer and Lynch capped the run with a layup.
The Celtics opened the second half with a 10-3 spurt as Walker connected on a pair of 3-pointers, pulling them within 71-64.
But Philadelphia closed the quarter with a 16-6 run, opening an 86-67 lead. Iverson highlighted the spurt with three jumpers and a free throw.
Boston pulled no closer than nine in the fourth quarter. But after Walker connected on a 3-pointer to cut Philadelphia's lead to 98-89 with 2:45 left, Snow and Tyrone Hill hit short jumpers to seal the win.
Hill finished with 16 points and McKie added 13.
"It just goes to show you that good things can happen when you work hard and everyone's playing together," Hill said. "With everything we've been through, the adversity, injuries and stuff like that, you can't ask for much more."

Unlike my other condensed videos...I picked top 10 plays in one game to show that how exciting AI was in just a regular NBA Season Game.....enjoy!
Allen Iverson was just as dangerous a
passer as he was a scorer.
Iverson scored 24 points and handed out a season-high 12 assists
as the Philadelphia 76ers overcame a shaky second quarter for a
108-101 victory over the Chicago Bulls, who lost their ninth
straight road game.
A three-time scoring champion, the offensively aggressive
Iverson has been more of a complete player this season. He has
improved his defense and playmaking and is averaging 9.4 assists
in his last seven games, collecting a dozen twice in that span.
"I just think he is playing basketball and it's really neat to
see," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "When your guards are
unselfish ... it makes everyone else better. It makes guys want
to run on the break and set good screens. It's a good feeling in
that respect."
"I've heard coach say that before and that's a great feeling,"
Iverson said. "When he says that I'm playing my best
basketball, he's seeing me play, and he is seeing it year after
year. Obviously, I'm getting better because I have the utmost
respect for him as a person and as a coach. It makes me want to
get better and work harder. I just want to keep it that way."
In the fourth quarter, Iverson had consecutive sensational
passes, leading to baskets that gave Philadelphia an 89-76 lead
with 6:47 remaining.
He answered a 3-pointer by Donyell Marshall with a jumper to
keep the lead at 94-86 with 3:19 left. After Jalen Rose hit a
3-pointer to make it a five-point game, Iverson found a cutting
Eric Snow for a layup - his only basket of the game - and a foul
with 2:36 to go.
Snow's free throw capped the three-point play, and Kenny Thomas
threw in a hook after a steal by Iverson to seal it at 99-89
with 2:15 left.
Keith Van Horn scored 20 points and Thomas added 16 and 14
rebounds for the 76ers, who shot 54 percent (38-of-70) from the
field and improved to 20-5 since the All-Star break as they
opened a four-game homestand.
"We really focused on moving the ball around and finding the
open guy," Van Horn said. "I think we did a much better job of
just distributing the ball. That in turn helped our transition
defense and it didn't allow them to get easy baskets on the
break."
Philadelphia (45-29) moved within one-half game of New Jersey
for the Atlantic Division lead and two games of Detroit for the
best record in the Eastern Conference.
Rookie Jay Williams had 23 points and eight assists for the
Bulls, who fell to a league-worst 3-36 on the road.
"If anything, it's going to make us really sit down and look
into ourselves this summer and try to get better so we can try
to become a better team," Williams said.
"We have to find a way to get one of the next two on the road so
we can go into next season knowing that we can win on the
road," Bulls forward Donyell Marshall said. "Right now we don't
have the confidence we need to get."
The Sixers played without center Derrick Coleman (thigh bruise),
while the Bulls were without forward Tyson Chandler (throat
infection).
The Sixers missed eight straight shots at the end of the second
quarter and committed four turnovers early in the third period,
putting themselves in a 59-51 hole. But they turned things
around with a trapping defense energized by Snow and reserves
Brian Skinner and Greg Buckner.
"That lineup with Buckner, Kenny and Brian, that really got us
going," Brown said. "It got us the energy. Buck does that. I
haven't played him enough. He's given us a lot of energy."
While Philadelphia was holding Chicago to one basket in eight
minutes, Snow had six free throws and set up Skinner and Buckner
for easy hoops. Iverson's free throws capped the 19-3 surge
and gave the Sixers a 70-62 lead with 3:23 to go.
Van Horn's 3-pointer opened the final period and gave
Philadelphia an 81-68 lead. A jumper by Williams cut the
deficit to 85-76, but Iverson lobbed one to Van Horn for an
alley-oop dunk, then hooked a pass to McKie for a layup.
"I think he's growing up as a player," Brown said. "He's seeing
things in games, he knows how to deal with double-teams, and I
think he recognizes when you're the best player, the ball always
has a tendency to come back to you.
"Even if it's late in the clock, it's going to find its way back
into his hands. You can't have a fear of giving the ball up
early."
Iverson made 8-of-14 shots and 8-of-12 free throws, adding three
steals.
"I'm not changing anything," Iverson said. "I'm just playing
basketball and trying to take whatever the defense gives me.
When my guys are open and they have good looks, I'm just trying
to get them the ball. I'm just trying to play the right way."
