Many organisations use crowdsourced data to improve processes and efficiency. Crowdsourcing is also useful in helping us learn about and understand our past. Here are two projects which use technology and involve citizens to trace the history of the Chinese community in Singapore.
The National University of Singapore's Department of Chinese Studies has developed an interactive map to document the historical relocation of the more than 1,000 Chinese temples here (http://str.sg/46ZT). The team is also working on an app for the public to submit photos and information.
In another project, the National Library Singapore has done an annotated version of the book “One Hundred Years’ History Of The Chinese In Singapore” by Mr Song Ong Siang, and uploaded it on the National Archives' Citizen Archivist portal. It chronicles 180 prominent members of the Chinese community in early colonial Singapore. (http://str.sg/4Xuo).
