"Your wives are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them." ( Qur'an 2:187)
Often, when this verse is mentioned, we are reminded that garments protect and beautify, making us feel loved, secure and safe.
I am still learning how to be a garment, still trying to perfect the art of being a spouse.
As a garment, I am striving for the ability to adapt, to change. To grow to accommodate my spouse as he grows, or to come in a little, when he needs extra support. I cannot afford to be so tight that I suffocate, or so small that I leave tender skin exposed.
As a garment, there are times when I will need to lighten, as summer nears, and to grow heavier, when winter beckons. There are times when I will be simple and homely, and times when I will be utterly gorgeous, depending on the situation, depending on my mood.
In this way, I am finding ways to achieve synergy with my spouse. To be his positive when he hits a negative. To be his left brain when he is stuck in right brain mode. To be his pillar when he needs to lean. To be his pillow when he needs to lay. And he is learning the same.
Being a garment doesn’t happen by miracle or mistake. It is a conscious choice to live according to Allah SWT’s guidelines, to strive to fulfil the promise of His words.
I pray that Allah SWT blesses us all with the best garments for us, enabling us to be the best garments in return.
