A group of scientists in Russia set a GPS tracker on a steppe eagle, and track its location 12 times a day, if it goes outside mobile coverage area, the data will be stored and send back to Russia when it gets coverage again. This eagle spent most of its summer out of coverage in western Kazakhstan then entered Iran; all the data had to send from Iran back to Russia with expensive roaming text messages. The roaming fee was a lot more than they expected, and they decided to crowdfund to support the roaming fee for this steppe eagle and 12 other birds they are tracking.
