อีกหนึ่งปรากฏการณ์ที่เป็นคู่หูดูโอ้กับ Diamond Dust ก็คือ Sun Pillar
คือสุดยอดความงดงามของธรรมชาติที่ต้องไปชมให้ได้สักครั้ง

Diamond Dust เป็นปรากฏการณ์ธรรมชาติที่จะเกิดขึ้นได้ก็ต่อเมื่อเงื่อนไขทางสภาพอากาศที่พอเหมาะ
เกิดในช่วงเช้าที่อากาศแจ่มใสอุณหภูมิต่ำกว่า -10 องศาเซลเซียส และไม่มีลม เมื่อไอน้ำระเหยขึ้นมาก็จะแข็งตัวอย่างรวดเร็วกลายเป็นเกล็ดน้ำแข็ง เมื่อสะท้อนเข้ากับแสงแดด ก็จะทำให้เกิดประกายระยิบระยับ

ในขณะที่ Sun Pillar คือ แสงอาทิตย์ที่ส่องกระทบกับผลึกเกล็ดน้ำแข็ง (หรือ Diamond Dust) ทำให้เห็นเป็นเหมือนเส้นแสงที่ทอดยาวลงมาจากฟากฟ้า

這是上週末傳出來的消息。Oracle 打算停掉 Pillar Axiom 儲存系統產品線，並且裁掉部份研發人力，估計大約是 300 人左右。Pillar Data 早先是由 Oracle CEO Larry Ellison 創立的公司，2011 年在 Oracle 買下 Sun Microsystems 不久後，就被併入 Oracle，而後成為 Oracle 快閃儲存部門的一部份。

Oracle 的快閃儲存 FS1 就是由 Pillar Axiom 重新設計而來，與 Oracle 系統整合，成為 Oracle 特化系統的一部份。Oracle 的 “engineered system” 官方翻譯是「經過工程設計的系統」，超級繞口，基本上它就是專門設計來運作 Oracle 資料庫系統的硬體，「特化系統」不是比較簡潔嗎？

目前 Oracle 的特化系統包括有 Exadata Database Machine, Big Data Appliance, Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance, Private Cloud Appliance 和 Database Appliance。

長期來看，所有個別的、獨立的硬體系統，像伺服器或儲存系統等，不會是 Oracle 想做的；特化系統可以提供更高的效能，更好的整合性，以及更高的售價和利潤，這才是 Oracle 想要。

特化硬體並不是新概念，早年的 Apple 和 Sun Microsystems 的作業系統走的都是特化硬體的路。近年的 Apple 則是把特化走到變成專用晶片，當然這也必須像 Apple 這樣具有極大規模的消費用客群，這條路才走得下去。

至於 Oracle 在企業用戶端走應用級別的特化硬體，目前看來很難說是好還是壞，因為這些特化硬體價格高，即便用戶數不多，但總體的營收並不差。不過我想應該沒有消費者會為了讓臉書 app 可以跑很快，去買一隻專用的手機⋯⋯
