76ers coach Jim O'Brien figured keeping Allen Iverson on the court was the best way for his team to win.

Iverson played all 48 minutes and scored 19 of his 32 points in the first quarter, helping the Philadelphia 76ers snap a three-game losing streak with a 106-96 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Friday night.

Kenny Thomas added 20 points and 14 rebounds, a banged-up Iverson had 10 assists and Kyle Korver scored 15 for the Sixers, who hadn't won at home since Dec. 14.

"Over the last 16 games, Allen is shooting 46 percent, has a two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio and is averaging 32 points. When he's off the court, we're shooting 37 percent," O'Brien said. "We've been playing him 42, 43 minutes. There's not much difference with 48."

Iverson missed a game last week with a strained ankle and is bothered by a shoulder injury.

"I'm struggling right now physically," Iverson said. "I haven't been able to practice. I just try to save everything for the game. Fortunately, I was able to do that tonight."

Donyell Marshall scored 20 points and Morris Peterson and Jalen Rose each had 18 for the Raptors, who are 6-7 since trading Vince Carter to New Jersey on Dec 17.

The Sixers pulled away in the fourth quarter with a 12-3 run. A 3-pointer by Korver off a nifty behind-the-back pass from Iverson put the Sixers ahead 92-83. Andre Iguodala capped the run with a jumper that made it 94-83.

Toronto didn't get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

"We took too many 3s and some at the wrong time," Raptors coach Sam Mitchell said of his team shooting 10-for-32 from beyond the arc. "We had guys checking into the game and the first shot they took was a 3. You can't do that on the road. We just didn't play smart."

Iverson airballed his first shot, but hardly missed again in the opening quarter, making eight of his 12 shots, including three 3-pointers and a long jumper. He hit two 3s in the final minute of the quarter, and Iguodala beat the buzzer with another 3 from way beyond the arc.

"Allen got us going early and we just fed off him," said Korver, who shot 5-of-8 on 3-pointers.

Peterson, coming off a career-best 37-point performance Wednesday night against Boston in which he made seven 3-pointers, shot 6-for-12, including 1-for-5 from 3-point range.

The Raptors took a 71-66 lead in the third quarter, causing some fans in this football-crazed city to chant "E-A-G-L-E-S!" Philadelphia hosts Minnesota in an NFC divisional playoff game on Sunday.

Allen Iverson's "team first" approach with the Philadelphia 76ers has earned him respect from his teammates and fans.


Iverson, recently voted a starter for the Eastern Conference All-Star team despite starting the season with Memphis, had 17 points, five rebounds and three assists in the 76ers' 107-97 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night.

Philadelphia (15-28) has won both games since Iverson was voted an All-Star starter by the fans, a selection that has drawn criticism. The former NBA MVP and four-time scoring champion plans to play in his 11th straight All-Star game Feb. 14 at Cowboys Stadium.

"My fans still support me. You can't ask for more than that," he said. "When you play this game, it's all about the people that come to see you, the people in the stands. For somebody to say the fans don't mean anything, that's crazy."

Since joining the team in early December, Iverson has helped the 76ers go 10-13 after a 5-15 start. He entered Saturday averaging 14.2 points, well below his career average, and 4.3 assists.

"He means a lot more than his numbers," Philadelphia coach Eddie Jordan said. "His spirit gives us momentum, his spirit gives us confidence, it gives us a sounding board, it gives us a calming effect. He means a lot.

"He's special to us. He's not the Allen we used to know back in 2001, but he adds leadership, toughness and some experience."

Iverson, whose reputation took a hit in recent years after turbulent stops in Detroit and Memphis, has impressed his 76ers teammates with his maturity.

"He's been great with us," said Philadelphia forward Elton Brand, who scored 23 points. "You hear the rumors and stories over the years, and it's great to see him in this light because he totally has a positive image to me."

Thaddeus Young had 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Lou Williams scored 14 points for the 76ers, who won consecutive games for just the fourth time this season.

"The most important thing is for us to take it one game at a time and not try to look forward," Iverson said. "I think the sky's the limit."

Danny Granger had 22 points, A.J. Price added 17 and Troy Murphy had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Pacers (15-29), who have lost four of five after a three-game winning streak.

"Our guys played exhausted and we got outplayed, no question about it," Indiana coach Jim O'Brien said. "Our guys are exhausted and they should be. We just played a five-week schedule that is taxing."

Trailing by 13 entering the fourth quarter, the Pacers cut it to 88-83 after Price's consecutive 3-pointers. Philadelphia answered with an 11-0 run over the next 3 minutes to make it 99-83. Young had seven points during the spurt.

"We need to win, we got the talent," Brand said. "We just need to put it all on the court and play together."

Philadelphia took its biggest lead, 74-58, on Iverson's jumper with 5 minutes left in the third quarter. Indiana cut the deficit to nine before falling behind 86-73 entering the final period.

"This is one we could've and should've won," said Pacers guard Brandon Rush, who had 14 points. "We couldn't make shots when we needed."

Game notes
Philadelphia rookie guard Jrue Holiday needed 12 stitches to close a cut above his right eye after banging his head on the court in the first quarter. He returned in the third quarter. ... When it was time for Detroit to get back into the game or allow Philadelphia to even their playoff series, Chauncey Billups took over.


Billups made two clutch 3-pointers. He hit a nice fadeaway, and sank a couple of foul shots.

By the time Billups finished scoring 10 straight points for the Pistons in the final 3:05 of regulation, the 76ers' lead was gone -- and so might have been their shot at making this a long series.

Billups scored 12 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, Rasheed Wallace hit a couple of 3-pointers in overtime and Detroit overcame an inspired effort by Allen Iverson to go up 3-1 in its first-round series with a 97-92 win over the Sixers on Sunday.

"It seemed like the tide was turning, nothing was really going good for us," Billups said. "I wasn't really making too many shots. I wanted to try. If I'm going to go down, I'm going to go down fighting.

"Shots just started going for me and we started to run a couple of plays for me."

The Pistons survived another scare from Philadelphia, and headed home with a chance to wrap up their playoff series. Game 5 is Tuesday in Detroit.

"The guys competed their guts out. They just got beat by the best team in the world," said Sixers coach Jim O'Brien.

After Billups carried the Pistons in a frantic finish to the fourth quarter, Wallace hit a decisive 3-pointer with 1:29 left in OT. Richard Hamilton hit a runner on the baseline with 14.5 seconds left, then sealed the win with a couple of free throws.

"Those were good shots from myself, Rip and Chauncey," Wallace said. "I'd take those shots any day."

Wallace's 3 came right after Chris Webber hit a 3-pointer and Iverson made two free throws, tying the game 90-all.

"He told me to come to him because he was feeling it," Hamilton said. "He knocked down a big shot for us."

Rasheed Wallace had 17 points and Ben Wallace added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Pistons, who bounced back from a Game 3 loss Friday night.

Tayshaun Prince, who added 17 points, went down briefly at the end of the third quarter with a mildly sprained right ankle, but returned to the game. He was listed as day-to-day.

Iverson again did his best to carry the Sixers, scoring 36 points on 14-for-24 shooting with eight assists.

Webber added 23 points, including several key baskets in the third and fourth quarters. Samuel Dalembert had 15 rebounds.

Iverson did all he could in going over 30 points for the third time in the series, including a running halfcourt shot down the left side to end the first quarter and a jumper with 28.3 seconds left in regulation that gave the Sixers a short-lived 82-80 lead.

"I could feel bad, and I do, but I feel real good about our effort," Iverson said. "I feel real good about my teammates."

Billups answered Iverson's final 3 in regulation with a 3-pointer from the corner that gave the Pistons an 83-82 lead with 22 seconds left.

Billups, though, got a little too aggressive and fouled Willie Green, sending the 78 percent free throw shooter to the line with 3.1 seconds left. Green missed the first and hit the second to tie the game.

"I was just concentrating on trying to sink it, but, unfortunately, I came up short on a free throw that could have won the game for us," said Green, who left the game briefly in the second quarter to get eight stitches over his left eye.

Rasheed Wallace missed a long jumper after Green's free throw, and the game went into overtime.

The 76ers had a nine-point lead with just over 6 minutes left.

With the lead going back and forth late in the fourth quarter, normally reserved Sixers chairman Ed Snider started acting more like Dallas owner Mark Cuban, leaping from his courtside seat and waving his arms while protesting a non-call.

Iverson made his boss feel better with a 3-pointer, but Billups came right back down with a 3 of his own, pulling the Pistons to 80-76 with 2:59 left.

"I was just waiting to run the offense and then I decided to be aggressive," Billups said. "Guys were finding me and shots were going down."
